Some are nomads until they find a place they would like to build. For myself? I set my world for a very leisurely experience, so my days are longer and I don't need to worry so much about hunger. I start by making a knife and setting out to find reeds to make 4 hand baskets and 1-2 reed chests (I use the CarryOn mod that allows carrying a chest on your back). At the same time, I'm looking for berries, crops (especially flax to get seed for an early farm), and clay. Also at the same time, I'm looking for a place to spend the night. **I'm careful about how many types of berries and crops I gather so that I do not run out of inventory space. They get marked on the map though. I usually set up some type of shelter fairly close to spawn and have at least enough built that I'm fully protected before nightfall. I usually spend the first night making clay items so that I am able to cook as soon as possible. I also "bury" one chest to act as a mini-cellar to keep my food and raw hides fresh longer (a block of hay acts as a 'door'). The shelter gets expanded as I have time and resources; same with the cellar. [it is not unusual for me to dig clay in a way that preserves the surface layer so that the landscape is not destroyed by my digging. This creates a large underground room which may become my first shelter, providing overhead protection from rain and a great place to set up pit kilns. It also has plenty of space to store stuff.] I hope this helps! Edited 19 hours ago by dakko

As @dakko said, 1 hour ago, dakko said: At the same time, I'm looking for berries, crops (especially flax to get seed for an early farm), and clay. Also at the same time, I'm looking for a place to spend the night. Building a base first will be lethal because you do not have enough time to both gather food to keep you alive through the first few nights and gather the resources needed to start constructing a farmhouse. I have spent more nights in a hole in the ground in total darkness than I care to count. My current home is actually still just a hole in the ground and I am slowly building a proper base as time allows. What dakko and I are trying to help you understand is that time is your single most valuable resource and you will sometimes have to spend it doing more than one thing at once to survive. So yes, while you're wandering about looking for resources, also be looking for a place where you can setup a base. Just don't get too attached to the first place you find because you may end up having to move. I would generally try to stay within 500 blocks of spawn, try to leave near water (for farming and reeds) and do not dig up the cattail roots. I know you can cook and eat them, but if you do then, you won't have any more cattails... and you will find out that you will need the reeds for a LOT of things, especially for making horsetail poultices, which are valuable because they allow you to quickly heal which will prevent you from starving to death while recovering from an injury. Also you can heal hunger damage with a poultice, but don't tell Tyron because it's probably cheating but when it comes to survival, I don't care. haha
cjameshuff Posted 8 hours ago Report Posted 8 hours ago I'm on my second world, after getting the first to the point of building full plate steel armor and then restarting for 1.22. In the second, I've done the Archives and when weather warms up and I get some rice harvests in will be heading for the second story location. Both times I set up a simple dirt shelter in the side of a hill as protection from monsters and wildlife within a couple hundred blocks of spawn, in an open area near a pond that let me make some hydrated farmland with a ditch to keep animals out. I made some reed chests for storage and a bed for getting through the nights, with a door plugged up with straw blocks, and went around looking for copper, living mostly off berries and mushrooms, and collecting and saving grain and roots while planting the seeds to supplement the forage with some small harvests before winter. When exploring, I'll build similar shelters with beds in the surrounding areas, and try to stick to open areas where I can see predators and avoid them or build pit traps. All you need to do to survive the night is sleep. I don't even try to fight drifters until I have some armor and decent metal weapons.
