Make sure where you spawn as a new player, all the starting goods are within a resonable distance.

This has to be the worst start of a game ive ever played that I want to play.

No clay. GG this game is terrible. 2 hours wasted

Oh dont worry I dont even get dried grass from grass. Flint knife on grass (short) medium. BASED ON THE FUCKING IN GAME GUIDE?!?!?!

Care to explain this?

So lemme get this straight: You took two flints and knapped a knife head, crafted an actual knife with it in your inventory using the knife head and a stick, and are holding that knife in your main hand while destroying the grass, as in the actual grass growing in top not grass blocks, with left mouse button? And are not getting any drops from it?

First off, with your antagonizing and annoyed behaviour it's likely better to just stop playing, my recommendation. You clearly have not the patience to learn a game which doesn't handhold you entirely from start to finish.

But for the solution:
You crouch.
Then you right-click. Hold the right-click until the animation finished and the loot window opens.
You loot what you want.
The corpse turns into a pile of bones.
You can then smash the bones up to gather them as well.

If you open the Handbook ('H' as the basic command) then you get a game guide. All game mechanics are explained in there, besides in-depth technical aspects there is no reason to open google for answers, the game provides them in full.
The only exception might be at best the building of the few multi-block structures currently available.

Welcome to the game and forums! One thing to check is go into your game settings, click the Interface tab, and make sure that "Block info overlay" and "Block interaction help" are both turned on. The former helps you figure out what kind of block you're looking at and whether it needs a particular quality of tool to break, while the latter is a handy "cheat sheet" on some of the various interaction shortcuts.

A couple of things to check here, some of which @Rainbow Fresh already mentioned--make sure that the knife is actually a knife, and not a knife blade. It's an easy mistake to make. To make a knife, just combine the blade with a stick or bone(not small bones) in the crafting grid.

Also make sure that the grass is actually grass. This probably sounds a bit silly, however, there is at least one plant type in the game--the redtop grass stuff--that is technically grass but counts as a type of flower and not grass when it comes to actual gameplay.

Likewise, trying to harvest grass marked as "eaten" will destroy the grass and yield nothing. However, "eaten" grass currently only appears if the player has harvested it. If you're trying to harvest normal grass with a knife/scythe and are getting nothing, it sounds like you may have found a bug, which you should report on the Github bug tracker( https://github.com/anegostudios/VintageStory-Issues/issues ), or an issue with mods if you are playing with mods installed(I'm assuming this isn't the case, but some new players jump right into modding).

A couple other things I recommend checking if you still wish to give the game a try--make sure you're on Standard or Exploration difficulty as your general difficulty choice, and NOT Wilderness Survival or Homo Sapiens. It's not that new players can't start playing with one of the latter two, just that Vintage Story is a rather difficult, challenging game up front even on the Standard difficulty(the general intended difficulty). Wilderness Survival and Homo Sapiens are the hardest preset difficulties available and have MUCH less margin for error as well as disable some useful tools(like the minimap). One mistake that many new players make is looking at the blocky aesthetics and assuming that Vintage Story is just like Minecraft, when that is very much not the case.

However, if you don't like the game, that's okay too. It should still be possible to get a refund, and it seems like you've already taken steps to do so.

Make sure you have block interaction help enable in the settings, in case you pressed CTRL and N at the same time for some reason (as that toggles it on and off). That'll show all buttons required for interacting with a given block or entity. Clearly you're determined enough to play the game even after requesting a refund, so with enough looking you'll find clay too. I usually look in areas with Very Common or Almost All the Time rainfall (viewable in the character menu, usually viewable after pressing C).

The problem in your photo is probably that the carcass that you are trying to harvest is in tall grass.  You end up targeting the grass instead; it's admittedly tricky.  Remove the grass- including the shorter grass that is left behind after the first pass- then you should be able to target the carcass easier.  And yes, be sure that the prompts for block interaction are enabled (I don't see the prompt in your screenshot).  That makes the exact thing that you are interacting with a bit more transparent, and tells you exactly which of the many button presses/holds that are possible are functional for that item.

But... as some others have said, if you have a very low frustration threshold then you might want to go back to Minecraft.  This game has some very complex crafting mechanics... and the devs have indicated it's going to get more so.  For instance, they have said that they want to do away with the crafting grid and make all crafting have some sort of mini-game the way that flint knapping and pottery making do now.  And yes, it's still an alpha, and the handbook is good but not comprehensive.  I find the wiki to be very useful at times.

That being said, Dude, this game really rewards a little investment.  I would not hesitate to call it the best game that I have ever played, though that probably reveals my biases towards survival games and complexity.  I have played almost nothing else since I learned about it three months ago.  I popped back in for one session of Star Citizen to see how that was progressing.  That's it.  In three months.

Same here, 5 standard generated maps, no clay in anyone of them. This game is the issue, I am pro gamer. "Rain Common" using map color. Run for 1000 blocks checking mountains and dirt level. No clay at all. Oh well. I'll request a refund, if clay is broken, I don't wanna wait for what's next. about 60 hours of 1000 enemies and 0 clay.

Comment section full of developers or friends of developers.. lol

I can understand some frustrations with starting out. I had read enough to know I wasn't about to play MC with new graphics.

1) I watched a few videos on the basics; surviving your first night, how to create your first tools, how to hunt and not starve, how to stay warm. How to work with clay, etc. Using ground storage! It was daunting as I saw how much detail was needed to play the game. Therefore...

2) I decided to play a crash-course first world where I didn't care if I lived or died. I wanted to make this world so it would give me more time to learn, so I cranked time up to 30-day months, held off monster spawning for 10 days, gave myself 60 minutes until drowning time, increased my temperature tolerance, slowed my hunger clock, gave myself max HP, made my tools more efficient... all the stuff that branded me as a newbie. I didn't care; I was there to learn controls, systems, day/night cycles, etc. Looking back, I wouldn't give myself that many advantages, as the struggle really is the heart of the game.

3) Because there were so many frustrating little bits (kneel for this but not for that, hold click for this but not for that, place this down but not that... oh, and lighting a ruin on fire because I thought you could actually light a brazier with a torch... you can't, but you CAN light the wall on fire!)  I stepped into the community to get some tips and pointers.

Now that I've been playing for some time I have focused much more on exploration, rebuilding ruins (definitely get Better Ruins mod if you can get only a single mod for the game!), and learning to chisel and craft more than I had in the past. There is STILL much I have never done, but there are points where you really feel like you have leveled up where games like MC simply don't... your first copper tool and armor sets, the leap to iron (I bypassed bronze almost entirely), and finally achieving steel. Obtaining your elk, building your first boat (I really recommend you see if you have a large body of water first!) and following the lore through some pretty amazing story locations.

VS can be a royal pain in the ass, but it can also be a really fantastic world to explore.

Vintage Story starts difficult but I suppose the word is uncompromising; however, I think a lot of players seem to come from Minecraft which is fundamentally a different game. My recommendation (and many others certainly) to new players is and always will be, don't neglect the tutorial toast and do use the guidebook since that's where the game lays itself out. Combine that with a good eye, using the map, and much of the game should start to "come-together" if that makes sense. As for non-standard advice, TOPS (official public server) can provide you with some game-knowledge too (spawn and exploring bases can give you insight on some of the lesser-explained mechanics like rooms, cellars, etc...), unless the world spawn had changed since I last played it used to contain some semi-tutorial structures.

I wouldn't recommend TOPS for new players. It's not that it's a bad server or anything--to my knowledge it's a great one. However, it is very popular, so it's not unusual for there to be wait times to get in, and the wait times can be rather long. Additionally, servers that have a lot of active players also tend to pass time quickly and pick the areas near spawn clean of resources. TOPS is also the official public server for testing the game, so server wipes aren't uncommon.

Personally, I would say singleplayer is better since that allows one to tailor the game to their exact liking, as well as pause the game or otherwise log out without needing to worry about time passing. For jumping straight into multiplayer though, it's probably better to look through the listings on the Multiplayer section of the forums or ask around on the Discord.

Fair, I should've probably prefaced, for TOPS my experience mainly has been exploring bases and spawn, not really playing on the server. Learned more in theory from singleplayer and the handbook but certain multi-blocks (for the longest time I didn't know that you didn't need a pit for charcoal making), TOPS showed me those in a tangible way which was useful (albeit I think you can do the same thing by exploring other servers or watching videos)
