I am new to the game and trying to build my first house and move out of the dirt cube, but my second winter is fast approaching and I can't seem to get rooms to work.

My cellar works fine, but it's started snowing and now I am freezing inside the rest of the house, there are no windows (figured I would add them when I get glass so left the walls solid) and every thing is enclosed I tried the 'debug room hi' thing and it says none of it is a room

What am I doing wrong?

I think the main requirements are size and door type. Your room needs to be 14x14x14 or less blocks in size. And doors need to be solid (not crude/ruined, and not grated trapdoors)

I recently started building a larger house and have been trying to divide up the interior with partition walls and doors to create several smaller rooms.

There's a lot more detail on this wiki page that talks about slabs and chiseled blocks, might be worth reading if those types are making up your walls.

Sooo I need to add doors to the inner rooms and not just have archways and probably put my stairs to the basement in a closet?

Correct. And the doors need to be solid as well; the only door that doesn't qualify as a solid door, to my knowledge, is the crude door and maybe the trapdoors that have gaps in them.

Also make sure that if you used slabs for the roofing, that their face is flush to the inside of the space you intend to insulate and not the outside. If the slab is flush to the outside I don't believe it will work. If you chiseled parts of the walls you'll also need to make sure that you didn't chisel away too much material, since that can also mess up the room calculations.

I have some interior archways and a large spiral staircase that goes from basment, ground floor, first floor and up to attic.

Each level of the house has an offical room or two but also plenty of open space (non "room" space). This mainly encompasses the stairwell and some hallways, however there are few (non) rooms conected to said hallways with open arches.

I've gone for a balance of both closed off rooms I can hunker down in if needed and also a open design beacues it looks nice.

I guess just find a balance that works for you. I think important rooms to close off would be kitchen to stay warm by in winter and also bedroom to stay warm while sleeping. My main crafting room is open to the hall via an arch beacuse I'm always dipping in and out of there and dont want a door in the way.

Yeah I just wanted to go from my kitchen to my living(read as smithy) room with out going through a door so I can use my torch holder for both, but its seems to be 4 blocks too long

The basement just needed one set of strategically placed door to work so that helps

Been working it out in creative, now I just have to move half the house over 4 blocks to line everything up in survival, if only I could have clam activity to get the remodeling done before winter fully sets in, but every time I try I get high or apocalyptic
