I put the copper in a crucible and started heating it ... then I went to chop firewood ...

when I came back the copper was already cold ... BUT ... the charcoal was still burning in the firepit ....

so basically the copper should only start cooling after all the charcoal has been burned out...

I wouldn't be surprised if the fireplace stopped working because you went too far and the chunk unloaded. Some things tend to stop updating in distance.

i was maybe 100 block away .... anyway ... having crucible in left slot will keep it hot, but in right slot (where is moved when 'cooked') it will loose temp (even when having UI opened - so its not distance thing)

my suggestion is basically saying to keep it hot regardless in which slot is placed ....

the item will not be affected by the fuel when it's in the ''finished'' slot
