So, on my private server that only a couple people play on, I was in a little dirt hut at night while traveling. Then, I noticed that I wasn't holding my torch, and it wasn't dark.  😕

Mind you, I have at times done a variety of things outside of standard survival play including spectator mode, and I have a Full Bright mod that I use at those times.  But, it isn't on right now.  I can engage that mod and things get brighter, but without it things are still not dark.  I buried myself, still can see the dirt blocks around me clearly.

I tried turning off all of my mods, no change. The server provides mods, but none that I think might do this, and my wife doesn't see the same thing on the same server.

Anyone know what setting I could've messed up that makes it never get really dark, when it should?  I like being able to see, kinda, but I don't want to live in a non-survival type state normally.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Most likely haven't messed up anything. The game simulates solar and lunar movement quite accurately and makes an attempt to illuminate the world appropriately depending on the position of the sun and the moon, but sometimes it doesn't go quite as well as it should. You might see completely pitch-black nights which seem like they completely lack starlight, and you might see red sunset-like light in temperate climates at midnight. Mod interference is not implausible, but those issues also occur in the vanilla game.

Yeah, except that when I dug myself into a hole and put a dirt block above my head, it was still light in there.  There was a lantern or two within 10 blocks, so maybe there was some seepage, but it just seems "even" lighting.  Not bright, but well above anything I'd call dim or dusk.
Is there an edit/op command to look at the current light level, or spawnability of an area, or anything?  That might help me diagnose...

Check your brightness/contrast settings in-game.

Could you provide an example screenshot?

Make sure you are away from any structures and light and hop into a cave. This way we can ensure there are no variables other than dark.

Also, just in case it is not something you have already tired, Gamma is what you would want to adjust client side to effect your brightness.

Good thought.  My Gamma seemed reasonable, I'll mess with it in the game to see.  Contrast is disabled due to Dynamic Color Grading, currently.

Okay.  Yeah, I think that trial and error shows the problem.  I got off of my elk and dug a hole, and am seeing the same thing.  It's only 18:00 and a little, so there might be some light from outside, but it was middle of the night last time and saw the same.  (Screenshot attached)

But, if I go 20 blocks away from my elk and dig a hole, I can bury myself and it's nearly black.  My elk does have a lantern hung around his neck.   So, I think it's just the unnatural nature of light seeping through things it shouldn't.  I am still not used to that in this game...

Here's the alternate shot when I'm 7x14 blocks away.  (I didn't figure out the c² for that, but, more than 10). So it's just that the elk was outside my little dirt hut in the first place, I guess.  \*shrug\*. Thanks all.

I checked it out at various shadow settings and it seems dynamic light sources like the one on the elk are not blocked. I even made sure to fill in all possible gaps on edges, but that doesn't change it. I'm guessing the only light source capable of casting shadows is the sun, so it doesn't light up sealed holes. Not to be confused with block light levels, because those are probably correct despite being able to see in the dark.
