I think you are overthinking it. Do whatever looks cool. You probably have so much food you can't eat it all anyway. I never use crates for food storage myself and I personally have limited use for pies since they rot to fast for my liking. I make jam and eat porriage in the winter months if I'm trying to keep the fruit and cereal bars full, but that's all preference. I should note that I don't use any cooking mods so do whatever lasts longest.

I realized the same thing after playing 7D2D and coming back to VS.

Drifters spawning in daylight since update?
Zane Mordien replied to Kevin Eric Snell's topic in Questions
Check the discussion forum. Someone posted it is a bug that needs fixed. -
For me it's only happens in summer for a month or so. Is it a bug or were they trying to make it easier on new players when they start?

You don't need to go south for lime or chalk. You just need to find a limestone or chalk rock area. My advise is to run 2k in every direction to start with all around your base and then if you don't find it go to 5k. I don't bother with salt so I can't help you there. You really don't need salt unless you are just doing it as a personal challenge.

Granite will be below the peridotite layer. You can always get granite. If you want another rock type pick a direction and head 5k blocks. That is usually the worst case on size of a single stone area.

Resonance Archives - Did things change ? [SPOILERS]
Zane Mordien replied to VonPanda's topic in Discussion
I do the fight with spears even as a black guard. Iron plate armor is a trap, if you have gambeson it would work better for that fight. You can't heal yourself unless you take off iron plate. It's one of those counter intuitive things. Better armor is not always better. -
Keep in mind that if you want to do the story locations they are located on the map based on your starting spawn point. So if you plan on doing them then just start a new world with a hot start.

So many mobs in my base now, all Im doing is fighting..
Zane Mordien replied to Obison's topic in Discussion
I feel like the mob spawns in 1.20+ had been noticeably reduced (outside of storms). There used to be loads more drifters that would spawn in 1.19. I wonder if they tweaked that back up and it went haywire. In the early Release candidates I felt the qtys of spawns where the same which gave you lots of shivers and bowtorns every morning. Then the stable release it felt dialed way back. -
Not sure where to start with all that. About 15-20K blocks south it will always be warm enough to grow or at least not cold enough to hurt the plants. If you are looking for world settings to have oceans these are my settings but they are not perfect. "landcover": "0.7", "oceanscale": "1.25", (Anything more than this and I just had nothing but islands) "upheavelCommonness": "0", "landformScale": "1.2",

If you started in the default settings, then about 40K blocks south is the topics. Around 20K south are the sub tropics where it is never winter.

With ultra high reading you already have the luck part down. It shouldn't take more than 2 vertical shafts doing node search every 8 blocks down to find tin. Forget zinc you have an awesome tin reading already. Just remember you really only need enough tin to make a few pickaxes and a anvil. Once you have iron the misery of bronze is over.

Forest fires make for good eating early game. Forest fire roasted wolf is especially good.

The moon is always there. Not sure why you wouldn't see it.

Also note that wiki says some things can't be changed but that is incorrect. All of the terrain generation can be changed.

No stones in the cold - a deliberate design decision - why?
Zane Mordien replied to SubtleOrc's topic in Discussion
I play snowball earth all the time and I feel like i find stones on the ground. I don't remember if i find boulders on the surface or not. I find plenty if polar bears as well... no worries there -
What are some good tips and tricks in locating a ore node?
Zane Mordien replied to Ihavenothing364's topic in Questions
I know but I don't keep track as I mine down and it doesn't hurt anything beyond the durability of your propick. Sloppy, I know. -
What are some good tips and tricks in locating a ore node?
Zane Mordien replied to Ihavenothing364's topic in Questions
Once you find the reading you want, then I recommend you have a stack of ladders and dig straight down while using the ladders to keep from falling in any caves you might hit. Prospect every 6-8 tiles down. Most ores don't spawn until you are lower than 0.7 of sealevel. If you didn't change world height sea level is 110 ish, so around 70-75 world height you start having a chance to find ore. -
The first dungeon is awesome. If you have iron gear you are fine. Just don't use plate armor because you can't heal. Bring lots of food and healing items.

The very first line that it can't open or create a new file sounds like a permissions problem for the server. I have one server that the save file location is locked up like that. I have no idea why. I had to create a new install to fix it. Secondly, did you fix the name of the savegame in the serverconfig file? If you don't it will create a new game.

Welcome to the game. Start growing food as fast as possible. Look for copper nuggets on the ground and mark where you find them because there is copper below them you can mine when you have a hammer and pickaxe. There is tons more but it would take pages. Good luck!

Not sure what else would be part of VS that is a problem. Nuke the entire install and start over fresh. If it's still a problem then it has to be something with the PC settings.
