  1. why not travel further south where those things grow? not all are implemented, but some are
  2. if you keep them fed, it should take about 3 in-game days. ez chicken feed method if you have the Expanded Foods mod: 1. Grind flax grains into flour 2. Mix flax flour with water into dough 3. Bake flax dough into flax bread 4. Grind flax bread into breadcrumbs. Without Expanded Foods, I would just feed the chickens flax grains and whatever leftover berries are about to spoil. Point is keep them fed or they won't want to sit on the eggs. Once they hatch try to separate the chicks from the hens if you can. Any chicks that are males will be killed off by your existing rooster. Once the chicks grow up, consider killing off the previous generation and stuffing your crocks (and belly) with food. it should take roughly 30-40 days to get generation 11 chickens which won't run away from you when you approach their pen. At that point you can build them little hen houses if you want to make egg-gathering easier. There are several tutorials online.
  3. Also I don't buy that you were doing zero damage to it with arrows. Unless maybe you were using a crude bow and makeshift arrows. I play hunter in VS and I took a recurve bow and bronze arrows in there and was able to deal plenty of damage to it.
  4. So it's an easy 2-minute fight. maybe 4-5 minutes if you don't know what you're doing. I sure he does a fair bit of damage to you, but it's easy enough to heal up, especially with alcohol bandages (I recommend regrouping them into stacks of 4 so you can shiftclick to soak all at once without soaking *all* your bandages at once). Anyway by your own measurements it should be a pretty quick fight. I'm not sure what your complaint is now...

  6. Never used the elk. I wouldn't hunt from horseback so hunting from elkback seems foreign to me.

Tule is somewhat common near small lakes, but because it's not compatible with grass in the recipes and cannot be harvested with a scythe, it is currently inferior to grass for thatching, however, if you have a big enough supply of it, you can gather it with a knife and maybe save those resources you would have spend on a scythe on other things.
  8. that's about what we experienced. yeah the elk would have been faster where it could have traversed, but unless you're playing with world-gen settings that make it easy for the elk, you're not going to get very far. The elk is only useful when the trails have already been blazed and paths have been cleared and marked. Even then bodies of water mean you have to break out the boats or go around.
  9. I find them difficult until I get decent armor and weaponry. Pushing hard for iron armor is a must to survive the heavy storms, but light and medium storms can be handled with leather armor provided you take precautions and have an escape plan if you get overwhelmed by mobs. Making bandages and alcohol is a must if you plan to fight through the storm just to stay alive. Overall they can be fun, but I wouldn't face them without decent weapons and armor.
  10. Update: ran out of food on the way home, but an encounter with 3 pigs gave me enough redmeat to last the rest of the trip home. Made it back just before a temporal storm was going to hit. Honestly, the best thing was just having enough bandages and alcohol to heal back up from any major injuries so that I didn't waste satiety trying to regen health.
  11. we were able to make the trek on foot, even through a temporal storm without using the elks. Bodies of water were crossed with a raft, which felt faster than swimming. I don't understand the posts saying that story locations are too far away, just make sure you take your weapons, armor, and a plenty of food. I made the trek with only 3 redmeat pies and gathering what berries I could find along the way. I'm playing Hunter for anyone curious with XSkills mod and honestly the hardest part was just getting the MacGuffin from the place without dying. Thank the Unconscious mod for stopping death to fall damage numerous times. It's a godsend for multiplayer servers where you might have someone around to bail you out in case of death. In any case, the adventure was more fun than the story that requested us to go the distance to reach the places. Looking forward to chapter 3!

I'm Starting To Dislike A Certain Blackguard In the days before the storm, the Blackguard leaned in close to the Hunter, a mischievous glint in her eye. “It won’t take long,” she promised, “and we’ll be back before you know it!” Despite the looming threat—a Temporal Storm set to tear through the lands in just three days—the Blackguard was confident. After all, the Lazaret was only a day trek away, a day and a half at the most. With a careless shrug and a defiant “To Heck with it, we ball,” they set off, ignoring the growing whispers of caution. But fate, it seems, had a cruel sense of timing. As they finished the visit to the Lazaret, the Blackguard suggested they head for the village instead of returning home. "It'll be quicker than trying to get home in this mess. I think we can outrun the storm!", she exclaimed. Yet as they journeyed under a blanket of night, the tempest roared to life. Darkness swallowed the path whole, and every step became a dance with danger. Sinister Shivers and Bowtorn emerged from the shadows, each misstep threatening to spell their doom. After what felt like an eternity, the storm finally relented. Still cloaked in darkness, they could just make out the silhouette of the village on the horizon. In that fragile moment of relief, as they regained their bearings and settled into the peaceful ways of the village, they learned their next destination: The Devastation. With a glint in her eye, the Blackguard couldn’t resist one more impulse. “Hey, Hunter, we might as well check out the Devastation while we’re this far from home base, right?” The Hunter’s patience snapped. Leveling an arrow at the Blackguard’s face, he growled, “Take it back... take it back right now!” Yet, as often happens on these perilous journeys, they pressed on to visit the Devastation. As they traveled in silence, each doing their part to assist the other on the journey, the Hunter couldn’t help but wonder who, indeed, was really in charge of their fateful expedition.

  14. The drunk hobo in the wine cellar It all started with those weird little scratching sounds. You know the ones—like fingernails tapping on glass but somehow... wetter. Rift activity was high, and we all knew it meant trouble, but try as we might, we couldn't find the source. We checked every shadowy nook, every suspicious corner of the place. Nothing. "I bet it's on the roof," I said, grabbing my lantern and climbing up. It seemed like a solid theory at the time. But as I stepped onto the shingles, all I got for my trouble was a face full of dust and a personal introduction to the local Bowtorn militia, who were apparently auditioning me for the role of "voodoo doll." After a rather hasty retreat (and a few muttered curses about flying porcupines), I regrouped with the others. The scratching hadn't stopped, and our nerves were fraying faster than linen in a sawmill. Then the blackguard asked, "Hey, have you checked the wine cellar?" That idea got me laughing for a second. The wine cellar? Really? But desperate times call for desperate measures, so down I went, lantern in hand, half-expecting to find a spider nest or an empty hole. What I found instead was... well, something else entirely. Tucked in a dark corner was the Shiver. But this one wasn’t stalking, slashing, or doing any of the terrifying things Shivers are known for. No, this poor soul was curled up like a stray dog, twitching and glitching out as if it was stuck in the middle of a bad tick. Its head jerked, its limbs spasmed, and every now and then it let out this pitiful little groan that sounded like it had just lost an argument with reality itself. It saw me standing there, lantern raised, but it didn’t lunge. It couldn’t. It just kept spazzing, jerking its head like it was arguing with ghosts, or maybe the ghost of bad decisions. I called out to the others, "Uh, I found it!" The Blackguard crowded in behind me, and we just stared. Then she muttered, "Looks like it got into the wine stash." That’s all it took. We were doubled over laughing, whispering about the "drunk hobo in the wine cellar" while the Shiver twitched away like it had no idea what was happening. Eventually, I figured it was kinder to put it out of its misery. One quick strike, and it was over. But for the rest of the night—and probably the rest of our lives—we’ll remember that Shiver not as some terrifying monster, but as the sad, twitchy hobo haunting the wine cellar. Cheers to you, buddy. You’ll always be a legend. ------- As I write this one of his drifter buddies is down there making a mess of things.... *sigh* here I go again...
  15. If you're on linux, look in '/var/vintagestory/data/Playerdata' and open playerdata.json. Look for the person's playername and change the RoleCode from "admin" to "suplayer"
  16. I don't like the idea of making a tool have combat capabilities, but I also understand that the knife exists and is both a tool and a weapon. Still, this is a good idea. One addition I would make it that the demolition hammer only works on craftable blocks. having it work on stone blocks in the world might be a bit too OP if you can just go underground and start harvesting a bunch of stones or bricks.

  19. Why yes, I do get irrationally grumpy when my favorite Blackguard nuisance misplaces a tool.
  20. I made a pot specifically for glue and another specifically for candle making so that I wouldn't ruin my food pot.
  21. It feels like perhaps the Joy of Sailing mod will still have some usefulness. I would love to see that mod entirely incorporated into the game, however.

  23. the story locations have spawning rules. Location 1, for example, has to spawn near mountains for reasons that will become obvious once you get there. I'm sure the other locations have similar rules that govern their spawns so they aren't messed up and unplayable.
  24. I would definitely recommend against cave exploration until you've gotten at least some bronze-tier armor. Unlike other block games, the key to advancing is limiting yourself to surface exploration and only digging down when you've found something through prospecting or surface deposits (like copper, tin, etc)
