Personally, I use Fedora at the moment because it's easy (there are a few more steps for certain things, nothing too difficult as the guides for Fedora are A+). Like a lot of people, I do suggest you use a distro that supports Flatpaks out of the box, like Linux Mint or Fedora, for example. You also can't go wrong with Ubuntu itself, as I played games on it for a long time with very minor issues before switching to Fedora (it has a higher kernel version with better firmware and hardware support). Mint is a solid choice though, as it uses the Ubuntu base, but scrubbed of Canonical's 'choices'. The process of using Mint is so streamlined, I would recommend it over Fedora, admittedly. That is just because I want you to have a better experience, and Fedora has made some 'choices' that are frustrating but not hard to fix after installation. If you do have issues with Mint, because of hardware...Fedora might be the next move for you, as I said the kernel version Fedora uses has better hardware support.

Foxes are probably the best compromise when it comes to hunting small animals, as you do get some meat from them more often. Rabbits and Raccoons are always a mixed bag in terms of meat, I don't mind hunting them because they do drop hides. Animal spawning is really random to be perfectly honest, it's very individualized to a player's save! So your hunting experience will be quite different.

I have a lot of storage at home, so my pockets tend to be pretty empty, so far I have two leather backpacks and two linen sacks. While I don't have a ton of inventory space, it's often enough to carry food, and necessary supplies while allowing myself some room for gubbins! Being selective on what one loots and leaves is useful, personally I mark locations that need to be stripped in the near future. Hopefully, I'll be able to eventually hunt down some materials for the new backpack with a bigger slot capacity. Berries, small animals, and easier to slay mountain sheep are so readily available...I can't keep up with all the raw food in storage. As a Malefactor, access to the unique sling has made hunting easier because using rocks as ammo is so much easier than crafting arrows; due to animals have trouble detecting my character when crouched, taking animals down so easily makes food a non-issue! I need to take a day to make a bunch of meat and vegetable stew. There are also many crocks in my storage with long preservation times, and there are a few more that could be filled (if only I'd stop exploring and cook). My starting area was filled with so many things that could become food that I never had a problem.

I will have a lot of flax grain eventually, once those crops have grown....There's a lot I don't know about Vintage Story, thanks for the Basket Trap tip. I've got spare Reed Chests after upgrading to crates and proper chests, I could make traps and bait them. Naturally, after making a Chicken Area to contain those cluckers!

I've trapped chickens, sadly they've ended up savaged before I can get a successful breeding program going. This is why I feel a bit doubtful at the moment; once I can wrangle and save chickens from predation, I will begin a chicken breeding program in earnest. As I would love some fresh eggs and feathers, learning how to get them to move in the direction I wish will be critical to meeting this goal. Copper, thankfully, is a non-issue for me, so doing the manual blacksmithing work required to produce a bunch of arrowheads is actually within reach. Given that time is not an issue for me, I've prioritized different projects first. Like a farm so that my Seraph's PPE, like a Linen gambeson is within reach, making combat against wild animals and bosses safer. Building up the Villa to a great state is of utmost importance for me, as it can be made to accommodate all the things I need: Chicken Yard, Farming, Smithy, Food Storage and Cooking, Living Quarters, and Storage. I thank you for your advice, as it will shape make my Vintage Story experience a better one!

ROFL Anything for extra storage space! Linen gambeson will probably be fine given that I am playing on Explorer Difficulty, the Drifters are passive towards me (I feel they need to be hostile if attacked; just like bears, wolves, boars, moose, and bighorns). The Boss itself will be aggressive, as I am playing as a Malefactor, I will be using my Sling mostly as stones are fairly easy to come by. If I can mass produce copper arrowheads and consistently source feathers, becoming an archer is probably in my future! I also changed the food depletion rate, so the penalty for wearing armor won't be as dire, but I will choose to wear armor in the one dangerous spot in the RA! When I get used to Vintage Story, I will probably make adjustments to difficulty for my next save; I won't play on Explorer forever...It is nice not becoming a wolf snack on a regular basis, as my spawn is very wolfy and bearish too!

I play fairly slow, building a temporary shelter and gathering and preserving enough food to keep my character going. The next step is reaching the Copper Age, empowered by a steady supply of food, I explore and gather all the Copper I can find. For the first time, I gathered enough that I felt comfortable making a bigger base (it's still a work in progress, as this is my first serious playthrough of this game). I have a meager Villa style build going, this has propelled me into growing crops for the first time. With enough linen, creating armor which will be useful in ridding the lands temporarily of bears and wolves is possible; their meat will fill my crocks, pies, and belly! I might actually get to a stage where taking on the Resonance Archives is possible in the second year once I feel my gear is sufficient to wreck the boss. Finding Iron is pretty annoying, as I will likely have to dig deep or find a rich vein of the stuff (I haven't encountered any as yet, prospecting has been a bust so far).

Metal ages definitely add a feeling of progression

Honestly, I turned up the spawning of surface cassiterite to make up for the low veins of cassiterite. In my next save, I might turn up the spawn rate a bit higher, as I don't want to feel pressured to find hematite (that can be processed into iron). My main priority is getting my farming and other industries going before worrying about hunting down some iron with a prospecting pick. If the devs buffed the spawn rate of cassiterite, without needing to adjust world settings, I would also appreciate it! -

Explorer Difficulty is nice for me, as it reduces some of the elements I'm not yet prepared to deal with (like Temporal Stability, Temporal Storms, and animals that are aggressive if the player is too close to them). I noticed that bears, wolves, and moose will defend themselves if attacked on Explorer difficulty; I feel this is fair, as the player is likely prepared to deal with such an outcome and won't be caught off guard. One thing that I find odd is that Drifters will just run instead of defending themselves like wildlife will. If I attack a Drifter, having that attacked monster defend itself is an expected outcome of trying to kill one. These strange creatures shouldn't simply run away and act 100% passively when the player initiates combat with a Drifter on Explorer Mode. At least a toggle should be in place for a person to choose if Drifters can retaliate after being attacked while playing on Explorer Mode settings. It seems like an oversight in my opinion, as animals can retaliate against the players to protect themselves.

Welcome to Vintage Story game and Forums! I'm doing fine, just getting myself re-established in a save due to an unfortunate incident (related to an account being considered invalid). Thankfully, I was able to get a new account and game license, as well as figure out where my little survival area in the current save is. It feels good to be gradually rediscovering all the stuff found in this save.

Linux distros/configurations under which VS is known to run
Tinkirus replied to skol's topic in Discussion
Like another Ubuntu Distro user suggested, it's a good idea to add the .net backports repository via the terminal using this command: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dotnet/backports Next, you will install the correct version of .net using the command: sudo apt install dotnet-runtime-7.0 Vintage Story Version: 1.19.8 Distro/Kernel Release: Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS/Linux 6.8.0-45-generic Mono/.Net package version: .NET 7 Graphics driver version: nvidia-driver-550 (proprietary, tested) Install Method used: Extracted from the tar.gz and used the command ./install.sh in a terminal window opened in the extracted folder to install the game on my system. I only used the client version, I didn't test the server installation. Hacks (if needed): None, everything went well!
