[US][1.21.6] Vanilla-ish Server. Still going strong!
cjc813 replied to cjc813's topic in Multiplayer
I'm also in need of a partner/admin. The server's been running in some capacity for the last 8 months, so I've got most of the big, technical pieces locked down. Having an active, friendly, reliable person to keep folks engaged would be a game changer. If this piques anyone's interest, please DM me either here or on Discord and we'll chat about it. -
Upheaval?

This is the problem. The learning curve is higher than you're willing to tolerate, and there's nothing wrong with that. Coming into a forum filled with people who appreciate that learning curve and basically calling their game bad... Well, that's not going to lead to a productive discussion. I'm not even sure why you bothered posting. If the game's not a good fit for you, then that's fine. Request a refund and move on with your life. But you ain't gotta come in here and talk shit.

iron chain is more than enough, in my experience. it's doable with bronze lammelar or chain, though i'd recommend setting spawn nearby if so. and @OP, if you're ever interested in starting a new world, there are settings for lowering the distance to the story locations. Ch 2 is *way* farther than RA. There's no shame in lowering the distance if you don't have hours of time to travel.

We will always be looking for players on our server. @BlueFalcon has set up a neat little RP questline that a small group can do if you want. Gear requirements are fairly low, and it's a neat little quest. Hit him up on our Discord (link below) and I'm sure he'll oblige. Other than that, we have lots of land to develop and build on -- temperate, arctic, equator: take your pick. Check out our webmap to see what's available. A lot of land is explored, but almost all of that land is open for building and progression. We're always looking for more players. I plan to keep the server up to date as new versions of the game roll out, and funding is basically unlimited. This server can run indefinitely. If you wanna check us out, come say hi on Discord. -
The person derailing TWO threads with pointless arguments is asking me to stay on topic. That's actually kind of adorable.

What cracks me up is my boy's in 2 different threads, neither of which he's the OP of, derailing the whole conversation. People are making suggestions about how to improve storms and whatnot, and he's just like, "I don't want them." Cool. Go make a thread about how you think temporal storms should be turned off.

The idea is very creative, but I don't think the underlying philosophy is sound. What we're dealing with is that temporal storms aren't engaging or fun for most players. People don't enjoy them, and they get nothing out of them, so they don't do the not-fun thing. This is perfectly reasonable behavior. Your suggestion is, instead of trying to make the not-fun thing into a fun thing, we punish players for avoiding the not-fun thing. This is the equivalent of ignoring the carrot entirely and just hitting the player with the stick. Instead of being an avoidable inconvenience, storms become an inconvenience you can't ignore. I think we should look for ways that make storms interesting and fun, that way more players actually *want* to do them.

As someone who would love to see storms "fixed," I like all of these ideas. I hadn't thought of localizing storms, but I *love* the idea. Imagine: X days before a storm hits, you get a notification in chat that a storm is on the way. Maybe your seraph gets a premonition or something. You check the map and see an indicator of where the storm will pop up. If you choose to go fight, you can go fight. Otherwise, if it's far enough away, you can just ignore it. This will allow players to seek out the storms if they want, but ignore them (most of the time) if they don't. You could even design it such that storms pop up most often within X blocks of player settlements, so that they remain somewhat impactful. This, combined with better rewards for actually fighting in storms, would actually make storms a "good" part of the game, instead of the net negative they currently are. Combine all of this with Jonas Tech that allows you to spawn proof at least part of your base, even during a storm, and I'd call them 100% "fixed." Edit: Another idea, you might make it to where players have the ability to "end" a temporal storm early, similar to how you had to close Oblivion gates in Oblivion. Maybe something like going into the middle of the storm and grabbing an item, killing a mob, or destroying a block, would end the storm, whereas it might last for a more extended amount of time on its own.

Halfway agree. I do think the enemies are a positive addition to the game, both for the sake of lore and for gameplay. The game would feel incomplete without monsters of some kind. However... Temporal Storms are very poorly implemented, imo, and I'd bet most of the community agrees. When they're enabled on my server, no one is ever jazzed when they show up. Most of the time, people log off and/or AFK thru them. Three main problems: 1) They always feel like an interruption. People never want to stop what they're doing to go fight. 2) They tend to start too soon on default settings. By day 10ish, it's tough to have the bronze armor and poultices needed to really put up a fight. 3) The loot isn't really worth the trouble. You can get Jonas Parts from ruins, and everything else by fighting at night or going underground. So they're kind of a high risk, low reward scenario that you're forced into. It just feels bad. I think being notified sooner (perhaps days in advance?) and giving players a reason to want to fight would go a long way toward making them actually fun.

I've been pretty critical of them starting a new project while VS is still in early access... *However,* it feels a lot better knowing that this new project is going to share the same engine. That means that some of the development of the new game will add to Vintage Story at the same time. That feels a lot better. I'm on board. Heck, I might even buy a copy depending on how it turns out.

Welcome to the game and forums. I personally wouldn't give up without at least trying a new seed. Clay is usually pretty common, and I almost always find it within the first few hours. Granted, I'm used to looking for it -- but it does spawn pretty regularly. As mentioned, look for green, high rainfall areas without forest floors. Forest floor blocks will just say, "forest floor," and just turn into low fertility soil. You can check the character screen to see the average rainfall in an area. If you're looking in a non-forest, non-desert area with high rainfall, you *should* be able to find clay pretty easily.

We've had a lot of fun this week. A handful of us have now colonized the north. Kev has been rennovating a castle. In his words, it's "super cute, y'all." Cryptic also opened a second tavern nearby, and he and Pocklee built a *massive* road leading to the area. If you want to join them, you can take the translocator from our welcome center at spawn... ...and then follow the road north. We also took to the high seas and began exploring the far east. Check out the webmap to see all we've explored! And lastly, there's whatever shenanigans they got goin' on over at Fort Kickass. All I know is, I rode by, everything was on fire, and Falcon started throwing rocks at me. Anyway, we're always looking for more to join in on the building, exploring, and shenanigan...ing. Come say hi on Discord! -
My Friends and I's Experience on Vintage Story After Buying it Sight Unseen.

That's kinda hilarous. The first hour is the one that feels the least like Minecraft, which is exactly what you described in your post. Glad the other 3 of you are still vibing and having fun. The cool thing is, after only 8 hours you still know next to nothing. That's not an insult to you or your friends, that's just how the game is. Even people who have played for hundreds of hours are still going to learn new stuff here and there. Hope y'all continue having a blast. Welcome aboard. -
