Just so you all know, my main goal was to reduce the amount of feed I used to get the chickens up to Level 10. I really want chickens that don't run away from me. It's a personal preference of course. It just takes so much feed to get there unless you do something to limit the feed to hens that need to sit on eggs. If you're not trying to carefully level chickens, this design may not be for you.
-
This design is not really compatible with "existing chickens". The idea is to raise a single generation at a time. No chickens upstairs when you get ready to bring the new adults up. I cull the previous generation once all the eggs have hatched. Also, maybe the troughs are too far away. Not sure.

Me: I'm looking forward to setting up my starter base in my new world! VS: F u and your F your starter garden

I don't have this world anymore @Kreeate, but if you look at Image 4 in my post from March 31, I'm looking at the underneath of the trapdoors, in the area where the chicks grow up. What you can't see in the picture is that there is another dirt block right beside the door so the chickens can hop up.
-
The second feed trough mirrors the one you can see in the picture on the other side of the gate entrance. It's symmetrical.

At the very least, keeping the map loaded while the player has it open would be a great improvement. It's okay to have it load as I'm scrolling around, but frustrating to have it disappear and re-load areas I've already scrolled to, during a single map-viewing session.

Image 1: A view of the baby chicken "drop". Image 2: My player access to the drop area - in the back of the coop. Image 3: A view of the drop area from the other side, inside the drop area. Note that the blocks above me are full cobblestone blocks, but the two up front are top slabs. Image 4: Me looking up at the trapdoors inside the coop from underneath.
-
No, they are just sandstone cobblestone slabs, put on the top half of the block, so there is a half block gap.

I've tried petting chickens. It says they stand still and they do...for like one half second. Useless. Edit: To be clear, you do right click them to pet them. It just stands still for a split second.

JessieImproved started following Feed Efficient Chicken Coop
-
Hi everyone, thought I would share my chicken coop. It's designed to use as little feed as possible to cycle chicken generations. I have a coop house and a run area with two troughs. (I use the chicken feed mod, but that's not important to the design). Inside the coop there are currently 3 hen boxes. There are upper half slabs that open up to a 2 block deep trench below. Only the baby chicks can run down here, and then they can't get out. This means they lose access to the feeding troughs in the run. When the baby chicks grow up, I open the trap doors in the back and let them up. Then I close the trap doors so they can't get back down, and start the next generation.

My tip? Don't make lots of food at once...
JessieImproved replied to Broccoli Clock's topic in Discussion
I do this. Make one fruit pie every other day. Bake them one stage when they are fresh for 2 days or less. When they are fully cooked, move them to my "finished food" storage. I have fruit satiation all winter, even if I haven't found fruit trees. Put a table in your cellar and make pies right there. -
@gilt-kutabe I think you are right, because I get the placement options with the other slabs. I don't really need a path slab in this case, so I think it's okay. But it's good to know.
-
I'm using the stone path slab. See in the screenshot I'm not getting a placement mode option. Is this normal? Also, I can try to aim for the very top pixel on the side of the block in front of me, and it will still put it on the bottom.
-
Following up in 1.20.4. I cannot figure out how to place a slab in the top half of a voxel space. I have tried to aim at a block above the space, but that doesn't seem to work. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I would like to place the slab where the red x is but no matter what I do it goes to the bottom half.
