Returned to this game as some colleagues were interested in trying it out and my gosh, I forgot how much I despised this mechanic and the acquiring of normal stone blocks. I'm curious, though. With the better firepit mod being as popular as it is, why hasn't this mechanic changed? Or better yet, why isn't it configurable via world settings? This is such a stupid timesink and it makes even less sense when we can heat up a stack and drop one item in at a time to speed it up. Genuinely one of the hands-down worst mechanics in the game.

All the more reason this should be addressed sooner rather than later, don't you think? It's now a very integral part of the game, yet it's nowhere near as polished as many of the other features that are just as integral to the overall experience. Why should we research if there are prior topics? There are no rules against double posting, there are no megathreads, why should we care that you find it annoying? If it's a thread you feel pops up a lot and you're tired of seeing it, then either just ignore it or help push the narrative that combat needs a overhaul and they'll finally go away? I don't expect AAA quality from Anego at all, that's such a stupid hot take. What we think should be higher priority is irrelevant because much like you said, in the end it's up to Anego to decide. I believe combat is by far the weakest aspect of the game in its current state, you disagree - that's fine. All we can do is provide our genuine opinion on things and it's up to Anego to do whatever they want with that information.

Okay, so just because a game is in early access we should entirely stop criticizing things we dislike and think could be improved? We should only raise the positive things and not let the developers know what we think could and should improve? In the end, it's their game. Whether they take our feedback into consideration is entirely up to them. But as a fellow game developer, any and all feedback is good feedback. Even feedback that may not be constructive, is of value. Stop gatekeeping feedback just because you disagree with it. I love Vintage Story - me, my girlfriend and some friends have been having a blast over the last few weeks. But we all strongly dislike the combat, we want it to be there - we can see what they want it to be, and it overall adds to the game. But so many of the mechanics and balancing are so poorly implemented that it genuinely is just baffling. But if what was previously stated is true about the wolves, then that explains a whole lot as to why they feel broken. Bears I can relatively easily kite and whittle down, even in melee. Wolves are almost entirely out of the question for melee unless armoured, because they're so much faster and easily navigate lush terrain. In the open, it's a bit easier. But the real problem is the sheer damage and attack speed. If I get mauled by a bear, I can accept that. They're massive animals with an unimaginable amount of strength, but if one wolf tears through me like a chainsaw in 2 seconds - yeah, that's just utter bull. It's not realistic, it's not fun - it's just bad. It may be harsh, but it's our genuine opinion. It doesn't make for good first impressions either, which for a game trying to grow can be quite damaging. Now I'm curious though, as we started playing during 1.20, what issues are still standing that are of much higher priority than fixing the combat system in your opinion? I mean, judging by the lore stuff that was recently added - it seems like combat is a rather large part of the game now. Surely it ought to be due an overhaul soon, because it does NOT live up to the standard of everything else.

Since sometime in 1.20 mob corpses are massively desynced on dedicated servers, often times only like 2 out of 10 mobs you kill can be looted without trying to move their corpse around to align it with wherever the server thinks it is. Was wondering if there's a mod that changes the range of the skinning mechanic to bypass this issue? Been searching a bit but can't find one.

If you're scared of losing progress, then always make a backup beforehand. You should be making backups regularly either way. Download the latest server version, open it with whichever archive extractor you fancy Open the folder where your current server is and delete the assets folder Drag and drop all the contents from the archive you opened onto where your old server is, overwriting all files Your progression should be unaffected because it should be in a different folder That's what I've been doing and it's been working fine.

I love how you just assume that I stand there fingering myself, of course I move around a lot - but when there's 10+ of them, it really doesn't matter how much you move - the others will whittle you down. Especially when you also have to take navigating terrain into consideration. Wow, stay alert and run away, what great advice... Can't believe I never thought of that... Especially when you have to lose momentum due to terrain whereas enemies in this game simply float up the terrain. The best solution early game is to dig pits and abuse their bad pathfinding to trap them, if that's good gameplay to you, well then you don't have very high standards. Still, why should wolves be this disgustingly overpowered, whereas bears are about as big a threat as a small swarm of bees? Why should we have to fill our entire inventory with spears for even the slightest reliable method of dealing with them? Their damage is absurd as is their attack speed, they're far more dangerous than many drifter variants which just reeks of poor balance. Okay? There's no rules against it so If you can tell what it's about from the title alone and you clearly don't care, why bother replying? Keep scrolling my dude. I'm all for having a discussion, but your holier-than-thou elitist attitude isn't gonna contribute much. Yup, this is what we did early on as well. Whilst effective, it really feels more as if you're cheesing the game than anything. I want the wolves to be a threat, but there's so many ways to go about it instead of just having them outrun the player and killing them in 2-3 very quick hits. The sling is an effective weapon early game, but sometimes the stones just phase through them.

Okay, that's perfectly fair. I do love my bees!

I'm not even gonna try and sugarcoat it, it straight up sucks. During storms there's like an 80% spawn rate of Bowtorns,at that point it doesn't matter what armour or weapons you have - they will obliterate you in seconds. So all you can really do is hide in a little hole and wait for it to be over, it's so horrendously detrimental to the gameplay and I'm absolutely shocked how it's still this bad. The loot is laughably bad without mods, some flax fibers, a rusty gear or a temporal gear every now and then. Really? And that's assuming you can even loot them because looting enemies is STILL horrendously desynced. You have to push the bodies around hoping you'll find a spot the server deems to be close enough to where it died - for it to be lootable. Rifts aren't interactable in any way, shape or form. They just stand there menacingly, to spawn enemies. They're boring and get frustrating when they constantly pop up just outside your house. The i-frame mechanic makes combat in multiplayer feel absolutely awful. Wolves are hilariously unbalanced compared to for example Bears, which historically has been a far bigger threat to humans. Sling is bugged and the stones will randomly go straight through enemies (may be desync and/or i-frame mechanic, feels awful regardless) Like, I genuinely can not think of a single positive trait to the combat in this game. Which is sad because the whole lore thing the developers have been working on is fantastic, but it's all dragged down by this horrible combat system. Combat desperately needs a complete overhaul, I want to feel excited about the next part of the lore but I honestly don't think I'll have the gusto unless the combat has been polished till then.

As it stands, temporal rifts, while looking fancy - are quite dull. They only serve as a means to spawn drifters and reduce your temporal stability. I think those rifts would be a lot more interesting if we could interact with them, for example, you could enter them and fight some drifters and potentially a mini-boss or something with some kind of mechanic to close the rift after you clear it and return to the normal dimension. This would make combat more interesting, it'd give you the option to try and clear the rift not only to close it - but to potentially also receive some interesting loot. And it would make an otherwise rather lame mechanic more interesting as a whole. Maybe different tiers of rifts could be introduced, identified by by colour differences or some such. Sort of similar to how different classes of wormholes work in EVE Online.

Me and my gf just picked this up and whilst we very much enjoy the progression and exploration, the combat is without a doubt the absolute weakest part of the game. I was honestly shocked at how poor it is. Wolves, for example, easily outrun you and can barely be hit with all the grass around since the game goes "Hurrdurr you try use spear on grass silly", so you don't even attack half the time. For being an early game enemy, the wolves are hilariously poorly balanced, they kill you very rapidly in 3 hits on standard if you're at full health. They take a lot of effort to kill and will just run away when low. Mad respect for what the game is though and will definitely be playing more, but the combat is in dire need of an overhaul. It's genuinely terrible. Edit: Now that we have some more experience and made more progress, they're not as bad. We still firmly believe their early game balance is completely out of whack. The only way to somewhat reliably deal with them is either to trap them in pits or carry a ton of spears. Their movement is erratic, their hitboxes seem iffy at best and they're a pain to try and hit with all the grass around (seriously, why does foliage make melee useless?) and deal a lot of damage. Hell, even with lamellar armor they can be a decent threat solely because the sheer attack speed is insane. I fear wolves far, far more than I do bears.
