  1. 30 day months. If I'm not completely misunderstanding the scaling. 30 day months make one month take 1 day IRL to pass, and I think the spoilage/growing/etc are scaled accordingly? I can say I plant grains one day, and coming back the same time next day they're just barely finishing growth. The extra food you'd need to survive 30 day months doesn't actually come into play, because you won't be playing 24/7, so it kind of evens out. As for Winter... Server's still running with people who are able/willing to harsh it out. If Winter is too extreme for your level of prep, you can just not log in and let time pass harmlessly. If you have a good community, they'll also help you out with food and supplies where they're able. So something like your own crops being dead doesn't hit as hard when you've got a (nice) community working on it while you're not there.
  2. I went looking for a server with a few things in mind: - Vanilla, or almost vanilla. Small things like CarryOn would be fine - Rare resets. I want a server that won't reset the map every (IRL) year or more. - A decent size player base. Despite wanting to be a hermit, I enjoy occasional company, reading what's going on in chat when I'm doing mundane things, and sightseeing what others have done. This is easier with a sizeable player base. - Lax rules. I don't want to be forced into any certain gameplay style. TOPS just happens to hit all of these almost perfectly. And from what I've seen in my limited time here, the mods are mostly pretty cool and they actually have been taking feedback. I enjoy it so far. Queue and all.
  3. New player: Hearing about berry bush rework coming, reading along, eating popcorn. Perspective: Current berry bushes are baffle me. I get this entry tutorial and impression that there's a LOT of complexity in this game, even need to pay attention to soil nutrient levels in crops that take a very long time to grow. Hail exists and hurts. I'm instructed to make a special pit for charcoal, cellars to preserve food, surely, if I punch a berry bush, I'll just destroy it. It can't be that easy? A week or three in (in-game time), I choose a bush and punch it, just to see... and I get the bush. Don't even need a shovel to dig it up. Just a whole, functioning, plantable bush. That feels so out of place. Yeah, I'll welcome a change to that. --- That part said, I see the fertilizer thing and I laugh because it even further makes me think "Don't Starve: Minecraft Edition" due to fertilizer being needed for replanted bushes in Don't Starve as well. I think I like the idea of the trimming-based maintenance better. Maybe both? Drag some real bush experts into a chat, discuss with them, and make a second rework in the future. I just got to Copper age for the first time, and feel like I learned quite a bit in the process. This feels nice, and I know it's not the only thing in VS that does this, and would love to see bush farming join into the random educational moments.
  4. I don't have the heart yet to kill a parent with a pup! Haven't played that, but have played a lot of Don't Starve. Can only reference what I know lol. And thank you! That's two people mentioning turnips and fur, so very much noting to focus on those.
  5. With minimal spoilers, what do I need do do to avoid a death loop come Winter? I already have some spoilers, attempting to avoid more it is SO HARD BECAUSE I WANT TO JUMP INTO COMMUNITY. This post is so I hopefully stop spoiling myself before experiencing more. My expectation of said Death Loop: Dying of hunger, freezing, and being bludgeoned to death over and over in a slow, painful purgatory until Winter finally ends. My current impression of VS is Minecraft meets Don’t Starve, and Don’t Starve taught me Winter needs PREP or else you die. How much food should I expect to need? What will I need for warmth? And is there any spoiler creature/event I should stock up on/prep for? (Just asking for the seasonal prep, not event.) Also looking for bare minimum required for hunting. I am not a hunter. A wolf attacked me and I left her alone after she ran from injuries because I saw she had a puppy.
