It's pretty common for a restaurant to offer bbq chicken by the half or full, intended for just one serving. Yes, including salad, bread and veggies of some kind or other. It would be nice if you could harvest, say, 1-4 feathers twice a month or so, kind of like you harvest berries. Though, TBH, I thought flint arrows were plenty powerful because of how big the stacks are. They probably aren't quite as good in 1.20, since now doing damage to critters spooks them. 2

Well that isn't a Costco chicken, even I can't eat one of those suckers by themselves as a single meal, and I can eat. 3
Thorfinn Posted November 23, 2024 Report Posted November 23, 2024 Fair. I don't do Costco, and dislike restaurants. I vastly prefer more "free range" chicken where I know they have not been fed growth hormones, and, fortunately, there's a lot of growers around here. There's even Amish-grown, if I travel about 20 miles. There's only a couple pounds of meat on a chicken, so long as it isn't a Big Pharma chicken. Costco frankenfoods might be different. 1

It's been a while since I wrote the initial post, but I was angling toward meat being the majority of the meal involved. Assuming the chicken is the main part of the meals for the day, it's probably still not going to last more than a day, maybe two, for an active individual. 3 hours ago, Deaderpan said: i agree with the comment made months ago talking about how chickens scare way too easily. the fact that they get spooked through walls aswell makes its worse. i understand that domestication is a huge part of the game but you just cant domesticate them without building your initial chicken coops away from your base. I dunno, in my experience chickens tend to be pretty flighty critters, although it does depend on the breed of chicken. The ones in Vintage Story are similar to the English game bantams and jungle fowl, which are more skittish than their larger counterparts. I don't usually have an issue with spooked chickens in the game though. Typically I'll locate the pen in the less active portion of my base, and spend more time outside of my base while waiting for eggs to hatch. Chickens also mature fairly quick, so it's easy enough to reach generation 4+ where they stop spooking quite so easily.
LuisEdGm Posted November 25, 2024 Report Posted November 25, 2024 You should be able to feed chickens with raw berries, they do eat basically anything, small berries would make sense
Khornet Posted November 26, 2024 Report Posted November 26, 2024 (edited) Out of all the things that need a rework/rebalance in the game I don't personally think they're a priority. They eat, they breed properly (as in they lay eggs instead of just appearing out of thin air like they used to), they drop meat and feathers when you kill them, they're functional enough. Most importantly though, the fact they eat only grain gives the over-abundance of flax grain acquired when farming linen an actual purpose. Maybe stop the roosters from killing each other is one thing I'd add to chickens ASAP since roosters don't really do that much IRL despite the fact they DO fight. Echo Weaver Posted November 26, 2024 Report Posted November 26, 2024 I'm generally satisfied with the chicken mechanics, but I would REALLY like them to stop spooking through walls. I searched for a mod that did this but didn't find one. 1
Nymue Posted November 26, 2024 Report Posted November 26, 2024 Yeah, I'm not a fan of the panopticon chickens that can see through walls either, which is why I love the chicken sit mod. Only have to suffer for one generation. And while it's pretty mean to roosters, Roman legions often brought along capons (basically neutered roosters that get super fat) when they marched. 1

Neutering is a common practice in general for male livestock that aren't going to be used for breeding. It curbs some of the aggressive behavior and in some cases, makes the meat more palatable. 1

In my house, a good siced cockerel cooked in stew, was more than enough for a 4 people meal.
