is there anyway to use clockmaker specific perks like tuning spear without being one? i know i can remove class requirements from class recipies but only clockmakers can use the tuning spear for hacking locusts. is there a mod to remove class specific traits entirely i couldn't find one. i like the class system in terms of perks and skills but not into gameplay features being locked behind them.

As of right now, it seems that locust taming via tuning spear is locked to the clockmaker class, and there does not appear to be a mod that allows you to have a locust or similar mechanical companion without being a clockmaker. The best I could find is this mod: https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/8986   While it still limits the tinkering to clockmakers, it does seem to allow a clockmaker to repair locusts and gift them to other players to use. So if you're playing multiplayer and have a friend playing clockmaker, it's an option.

Otherwise, I'd say it's a matter of either figuring out how to make a mod that removes the clockmaker requirement for locust taming, or finding someone willing to make the mod for you.

that's unfortunate. i play solo so i guess its either creative mode or nothing

never used it, even though i only play clock maker (for the discount translocator repairs). but if you can craft it you should be able to use it.

every other craftable class restricted item works for me, hence i suspect it to be a bug.

only clock makers can tame and repair locusts. while anyone can make the spear only clock makers get access to the point of the spear. its unfortunately not a bug its a feature. one i do not fully understand to be honest.

Thinking about it a little more, I would say it's coded that way for balancing purposes. If having the spear was the only requirement, then in a multiplayer scenario with default settings, a clockmaker could simply craft a spear for each of their friends and thus allow everyone to have a locust. I'm not sure how badly it would destroy the balance of the game when it comes to combat(it would at least weight things even more significantly in favor of players), but it would remove one of the major things that make clockmakers stand out from the other classes.

A decent workaround option would probably be to add some sort of craftable locust pet for the late game. Perhaps you'd need to forge a couple pieces from special alloy, add a Jonas part or two, and then animate the thing via a special part that can only be acquired via traders(expensive!), very rare dungeon loot, or crafted by clockmakers. The clockmaker would still retain their uniqueness, as they can access locusts much earlier than anyone else, can easily craft a locust without needing to trade/loot ruins, and are still the only ones able to tame the stronger corrupted locusts.

i play solo. i imagine im not alone. im not interested in balance and i dont really see how this balances the game all that well in the first place considering it can be bypassed by everyone being clockmakers with little downside at the end of the day. i just want to be able to play on my own and experience the various parts of this game without being shunted into a specific class. why give me the option to remove class recipes then still stop me from using the items from those recipes? its multiple layers of security for what amounts to a fairly unlikely event that even if it happens would be happening with a group of people all agreeing to do this. i get this game has a design philosophy of "make everything more complicated" and with a fairly robust modding community im able to fine tune that to  my liking but this just feels like overcomplicating something needlessly.

The special coding isn't for overall game balancing purposes, but specifically to balance multiplayer games.  And that's just how the game is at this time; like it, lump it or leave it.

considering its a 20 day old topic i did. i'm responding to replies with my view on the way this mechanic has been handled (and a correction to a misunderstanding). considering the kind of game this is balancing something purely for multiplayer in a minecraft clone where the only people joining you are typically people you invite in (or a server where rules can be set) it seems pointless and frustrating. which is why i made the topic hoping a mod or similar solution had been created already. to which i got my answer. accepted that this would just be another pointless decision i dislike and moved on. more replies means i respond as that's how conversations work. being dismissive of my opinion because you don't like it adding nothing constructive to the topic is unnecessary and i hope something you reconsider next time someone has an opinion you disagree with rather then be rude and dismissive.

Consider that your comment I responded to is only 2 hours old (at the time I'm typing) and doesn't matter when the thread was created (I'm confused why you even bring age of the thread up).  Additionally, you're first words (I play solo) in the comment I responded to dismissed the multiplayer aspect nor did any of your response seem to recognize that aspect of the previous comment. So it seemed to me that you hadn't understood what the prior poster had written and added a clarification which seems to have offended you.  Since you seem easily offended I'll refrain from responding to your future comments.
