Echo Weaver Posted December 15, 2024 Report Posted December 15, 2024 Your temp is 14C in June? That seems pretty low if you're in a temperate zone.
Thorfinn Posted December 15, 2024 Report Posted December 15, 2024 I'm not sure what I'm seeing there. Is that some new kind of irrigation ditch, or did you chisel it, or what? Evidently that is not the problem because you have 100% moisture, so it either just rained or you watered with a watering can. Are you sure that's fresh water? Looks like you must have a bucket. If you fill it, what does it say you have in inventory? How long have you waited? Wild crops don't grow at all, so far as I can tell. It will take a few days to see a change in pretty much everything but turnips. I don't believe you see any difference in reeds until they suddenly spring into maturity. Trees go from seeds to saplings fairly quickly, but saplings will keep the same appearance until they suddenly mature into full-grown trees.

Given that the game starts beginning of May, June isn't a very long time, even assuming planting things on the very first day. Hovering over the plant in question should tell you what growth stage it's at currently, and trees should give you an approximation of when they will sprout/mature once sprouted. Reeds probably take a week or two; they grow fairly fast compared to other plants, but don't give any kind of indication of when they'll grow back once harvested.
Michael Gates Posted December 15, 2024 Report Posted December 15, 2024 Wild crops do grow! It's slow, but it's worth mapmarking all those 4/7 carrots or 3/9 flaxes and coming back in six months instead of breaking them immediately for nothing.
Thorfinn Posted December 15, 2024 Report Posted December 15, 2024 (edited) Dunno. Half or maybe 2/3 of the immature wild crops drop a seed. I never harvest carrots ,and usually toss the carrot seeds from cracked vessels, but I did do what I thought a fair test in late 1.19, and planted what came from vessels. I had wild carrots right outside my farm to use as a control. I grew two generations of carrots in medium fertility, and none of the wild carrots did anything. On average, it was way better to harvest them right away for the chance of seeds than waiting. The wild crops never did mature before I died. Late September or so, IIRC. I don't know how one would get enough linen without taking a chance on every wild flax you find. Edited December 15, 2024 by Thorfinn
LadyWYT Posted December 15, 2024 Report Posted December 15, 2024 Wild crops do grow, but it's very slow. You're really better off harvesting them for whatever seeds you can get, and then planting those seeds in a proper farm. 1 hour ago, Thorfinn said: I grew two generations of carrots in medium fertility, and none of the wild carrots did anything. That sounds about right for what medium fertility soil should produce in a growing season, when it comes to the faster maturing crops. I presume that the reasoning for such a slow maturation rate on wild crops is to spur players to actually build proper farms in order to survive, instead of just hoovering up all the wild crops come fall and having a large stash of food for the winter without much effort. 1 hour ago, Thorfinn said: I don't know how one would get enough linen without taking a chance on every wild flax you find. If you kill enough drifters... Or just getting lucky with ruin loot, or haggling with traders. Buying linen might be expensive, but if I'm not using the gears for anything else it can help add another length of sails to the early windmill.

Thorfinn Posted December 15, 2024 Report Posted December 15, 2024 Oh, that's the Primitive Survival irrigation, isn't it? In the future, please mention what mods you are running. And make a mention of whatever settings you changed from default. Pretty sure sea water does not exist with default settings. Thanks! @Durux has the answer. Sea water, it no good. Good call, @Durux, and welcome to the forums. Too bad this wasn't in Questions -- you could have had credit for an answer in your very first post! Quite an accomplishment! 1
