fluffydragon Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 (edited) so i reproposed a tunnel into a wolf pit, but the wolfs kept spawning. I thought it was because i left the roof on so i took it off and killed the wolfs i had, to start again, but now i got like 12 adult wolfs and a few pups too that just spawned. Thorfinn Posted December 30, 2024 Report Posted December 30, 2024 I've seen similar on and off over the last few releases. But it may also have to do with the distance from the forest I've settled in, essentially the fraction of time the woods are loaded. I've found I need a substantially lower view distance on most of my machines, so it may also have something to do with the algorithm to catch an unloaded chunk up to current.
fluffydragon Posted December 30, 2024 Author Report Posted December 30, 2024 they're right outside my house! TvT
Thorfinn Posted December 30, 2024 Report Posted December 30, 2024 Yeah, in one of the early 1.20 pre versions, I had to keep spears on me while I was planting, and keep checking to see where they were. There were 3 distinct groups moving around, at least one of them just barely out of range to notice me. I don't remember them being quite so common or close. But I don't usually settle quite that close to a forest, either. BTW, welcome to the forums, @fluffydragon!
LadyWYT Posted December 30, 2024 Report Posted December 30, 2024 As Thorfinn said, welcome to the forums! In my experience, twelve wolves in one location isn't exactly normal, but I wouldn't say it's unheard of either. There's usually 2-4 to a pack, so my guess is that you have at least a couple of packs that spawned in the general area, that have managed to chase prey into the pit and now can't escape. 1
Zane Mordien Posted December 30, 2024 Report Posted December 30, 2024 Same as above, normal... NO, but it can happen. I once killed 24+ wolves in one location over 10 game days. I killed the pack of wolves, went inside my starter hut for the night and by morning there was a new pack of wolves in the exact same location just hanging out. I say 24+ because I quit counting. After 2 months they finally stopped spawning in that same spot over and over. It's all RNG so sometimes you have bad luck. 1
Zane Mordien Posted December 30, 2024 Report Posted December 30, 2024 Oh and good news is you will have plenty of hides! 2 1
Thorfinn Posted December 30, 2024 Report Posted December 30, 2024 (edited) Right. Might be able to skip straight from hand baskets to leather backpacks. Save enough linen for over half a set of windmill sails. Never have accomplished that, myself. Edited December 30, 2024 by Thorfinn
N0ma13 Posted December 30, 2024 Report Posted December 30, 2024 This is where we need fire. Molotov that pit and save cook time. 1

This is what I usually do, though it hinges heavily on having access to borax or a good source of limestone. If you don't have either of those, it's a lot harder to make the jump from handbaskets straight to leather backpacks. 11 minutes ago, N0ma13 said: This is where we need fire. Molotov that pit and save cook time. Or the new scrap bomb from 1.20. Of course, if you have access to scrap bombs, you probably don't need the wolves for leather anymore. 1
