Lanceleoghauni Posted January 10, 2025 Report Posted January 10, 2025 This will be my second winter in this house, after having tried to move south to warmer climes and being forced to settle as winter overtook me. Progress has been slow given a general lack of metals, but I've gotten a good push lately and I'm hoping to find some iron before my bronze reserves run out. I had a good harvest despite my mediocre soil fertility, thanks to bonemeal and just... So... SO many wolves. Combined with the salt dome I found, food is no problem this winter (last winter was a mostly wolf based diet). It's not as fancy as some of the things I've seen you folks build, but I'm pretty proud of it regardless 15
Maelstrom Posted January 10, 2025 Report Posted January 10, 2025 Did you start this in 1.19? All that fire clay shingling would be an even bigger nightmare in 1.20! I'm surprised that you haven't found high fertility soil yet. 1
Lanceleoghauni Posted January 10, 2025 Author Report Posted January 10, 2025 I did start this in 1.19! I only recently found a littttle bit of high fertility soil, but not enough to fully replace my fields, and I've been saving it to try and get some terra preta made. My worldgen was very kind with the amount of fireclay I have, I've hardly found anything else. mining and digging is something I avoided doing too much of for a long while because I turned on every kind of instability and it's a bit... punishing haha.
Apocalypse_Andy Posted January 19, 2025 Report Posted January 19, 2025 Looks cozy. Not sure I understand why you are putting skeps and farmland together. Is there something I don't know?

Is there something I don't know? I was thinking the same thing. Cozy. Efficient, what with the paths throughout. I have not had a chance to look into it yet, but when someone else asked a different question about crops, I noticed the following: beeFeedByType: { "*-1": false, "*-9": false, "*": true
Lanceleoghauni Posted January 24, 2025 Author Report Posted January 24, 2025 Certain crops count as flowers for certain growth stages. it's mostly a space thing. I wanted it to be kept kind of small and compact. It doesn't help the plants GROW any, as far as I'm aware. I just liked the way it looked. I have the space cleared now (as opposed to when I built it) that I could probably build a proper bee-house zone with a little effort. 1
Thorfinn Posted January 24, 2025 Report Posted January 24, 2025 (edited) Thought that's probably what the code meant. The seed stage and the mature stage do not count. So you probably want to harvest and replant as it comes ripe, rather than waiting for the whole crop to get ripe. Interestingly, if you put top slabs over your water spots in the standard farm layout, placing skeps on those slabs also makes the standard apiary layout. That could save a lot of time in early game. No mucking around gathering flowers. And it's the case for all temperate crops, including pumpkins, but that seems to be a little difficult to use. About half the southern crops have more exclusions, and in the case of cassava, not at all. Edited January 24, 2025 by Thorfinn 1
Lanceleoghauni Posted January 25, 2025 Author Report Posted January 25, 2025 That certainly would be more efficient early game! With a large enough set of fields I don't think you'd even need to be a particularly attentive farmer.especially if you're staggering growth speeds anyways. 1
Thorfinn Posted January 28, 2025 Report Posted January 28, 2025 (edited) After more playtesting, I think it probably would be a boon, but it takes a while to retrain me to the new mechanic. The old dog thing. You need to place all the farmland, but you must not hoe more than you have seeds for. The rest must be filled with flowers. I *think* rabbits don't spawn on flowers, but I would not swear to it. It's just that I'm such a doofus creature of habit that I can't remember to stop hoeing the ground. [EDIT] Also, instead of slabs, it looks to be easier to place a 2-high fencepost in that spot, and place the skep on top. You can probably place it on the post in the water hole, but it is low enough it's hard to get the visual on when it's harvestable. Edited January 28, 2025 by Thorfinn
Lanceleoghauni Posted January 28, 2025 Author Report Posted January 28, 2025 I can say, anecdotally, that I have not had a single rabbit spawn in my garden area so far! Though admittedly I have been having difficulty having anything but wolves spawn nearby for quite some time. I'm glad to see the solution I settled on for the skep placement ended up being a good choice! I noticed fences kept water from freezing, and I preferred the look to using slabs, so that's just what I went with from the jump. 1
