cjc813 Posted January 14, 2025 Report Posted January 14, 2025 I feel like the answer's pretty obvious, but I wanna be 100% sure before I devote dozens of hours this week to yet another new world... I wanna check out all the new stuff y'all are talking about, so I'm bout to download rc8. BUT, if I start a new world on the release client, will I 100% be able to move that world over once 1.20 goes live, or should I just keep chugging on my 1.19 world(s) until release? Any chance of something breaking?

Any chance of something breaking? With 1.20 being in release-candidate status at the moment, any world-breaking bugs should have been squashed by now, and most major changes should have been sorted out. So worlds started now should carry over into the stable version. However, the version is also labeled unstable for a reason: there's still a chance that something could go wrong and result in that world being unplayable for some reason. The likelihood of that happening on a release-candidate is lower, of course, but it could still happen. So if it's a risk you really don't want to take, it's best to wait for a stable release. All that being said, we should be a couple of weeks away from a stable release, judging by the recent updates in the News section. If you choose to start a world now, you're not likely to lose a lot of progress in the event that something does render that world unplayable, and if you choose the latter option you also won't have too long to wait for a stable release. 2

I think the way of approaching things like this is, "If it does, what then?" If your stash of dry grass somehow gets corrupted, what then? Gather more grass, right? If some block from a ruins becomes replaced by a red and white "Unknown block", what then? Replace it, right? What kinds of things are you worries about? [EDIT] If I cared about a 1.19 world, I'd probably make a backup of my existing 1.19 world, change to 1.20 rc8, then in a couple weeks move to 1.20.0. On the off-chance something "breaks" between rc8 and 1.20.0, fine, I have my backup. Make a backup of the backup, import that world and you are good to go. Edited January 14, 2025 by Thorfinn 2
cjc813 Posted January 14, 2025 Author Report Posted January 14, 2025 Really starting to like you two. When I read your posts, I usually end up understanding the game better. Thanks for the helpful, thoughtful answers. 3 2

Teh Pizza Lady Posted January 14, 2025 Report Posted January 14, 2025 Just chiming in to say that unless something drastic changes with the worldgen, you should be okay to take your rc.8 world to the official 1.20. video games are just computer programs and as such they like to behave terribly PREDICTABLY... *shudders* So, what that means is that once the world gen has been coded and the code has been set in stone, then with the same seed the game will generate the same world every single time. If a small portion of the code changes, then it could affect the world-gen a little bit, but from what I can see the only world-gen features they're changing is how ruins and structures spawn. If everything else is the same, then you shouldn't have any issues with it at all. Personally, I know they're not quite done with the ruins generation. I've submitted a bug report for a ruin with ? blocks in it. So at some point that's going to get fixed before they release it. But I won't be heartbroken if 1.20 releases and they tell me that my rc.8 world isn't compatible either. I'll just have a head start with the knowledge I'll need to get established in a new world! 5
