got curious a bit on this myself.  took me a vs moment to realize that elk are part of the vs deer family.  currently the deer can not reproduce thru breeding/feeding sadly. (hence gaining a tamed elk reaching gen 10 maybe)

wiki:

  • A domesticated elk may be purchased from a Treasure Hunter Trader. The purchase includes a saddle and bridle, and the elk can be controlled as a mount. Wild elk cannot be ridden or domesticated.

See Animal Husbandry for overview of raising other livestock.

I think they are saving this for new big update "Animals Husbandry" if not they would already implement it.

In version 1.21 it is possible to catch wild elk with a bigger trap and then feed it for couple of days to tame it.

So you can tame elk when they are adults, well fun to know that i just killed off a whole captured herd not knowing that I could actually catch and tame them.

A bit more explanation in the handbook would be nice on this 😟

Welcome to the forums! Adult elks can't be tamed, at least not yet. You can, however, trap a baby elk in the crate trap, and feed it to have a semi-tame adult elk. You can then saddlebreak the semi-tame adult over the course of several days to get a fully tamed adult elk mount.

I had so very little luck finding one of them, any tips on how to proceed, like time of year biome ect. Id like to not have to buy one it feels very unearned that way.

Any tips would be nice. 🫠

Honestly buying an elk is the easiest way to acquire one, if you're playing with lore enabled. You can get a discount if you bring the treasure hunter a strange gearbox from the first story location.

If you'd like to catch one though, the best places to look are high altitude plateaus and taiga regions, since elk prefer cooler climates. For the default temperate start, higher altitudes will be the better bet, but with a cool climate start altitude may not be as much of an issue. They also tend to spawn in grassy regions and sparse forest, not so much deserts or thick forests. They are a bit of a rare find though, as I've only seen them in the wild a handful of times in all my playthroughs.

I will also note that finding them is the easy part. You'll need to catch a baby one specifically and to my knowledge, elk can't be penned and bred like livestock animals.

Where do elk spawn?

The most common culprit is the temperature range, and elk spawn in cold but not subpolar climates. On top of that: not completely dry, not too much forest or shrubs, and usually in highlands, not near the sea level. Or, if you want the exact conditions:

Spoiler

As found in assets\survival\entities\animal\mammal\hooved\deer-adult.json:

minTemp: -14,
maxTemp: -2,
minRain: 0.2,
minForestOrShrubs: 0.0,
maxForest: 0.6,
maxShrubs: 0.6,
minY: 1.2,
maxY: 1.8

The Y level requirement is equivalent to Y > 139. The rest you can check for your location using the command /wgen pos climate.

FWIW, I've never encountered any if there are Cooper's Reeds in the vicinity. Gotta go north from there.

Aye, cattails have a minimum temperature requirement of 3 C, so elk will almost never spawn anywhere close to them. Pretty useful correlation.

On top of that, oak, birch, maple and almost all flowers in the game also only appear around freezing or warmer average yearly temperature, so if you're finding oak, birch, maple or any flowers except ghost pipe, then it's generally too warm.

On the other end, when you're finding arctic supplies, or when you can't find most vegetation (no tall grass, as well as no ghost pipe, no eagle fern etc.), then it's usually too cold. If there's no mushrooms and sticks in forests, then it's way too cold.

Though, if using any correlations of this kind, always keep in mind that the temperature can vary quite a lot even at just a couple hundred blocks of distance, so it's important to always take it with a grain of salt.

I was finding elk reliably around the -20000 to -25000 range and in the zones stated before like grasslands. Sadly the chance of them spawning with a fawn is very slim most of the time only finding a single male or female and more often then not with no offspring.

And for those doing challenge runs like snowball earth and dessert earth you can forget about ever finding one ever, that chance was on default earth.
