Human17 Posted April 6, 2025 Report Posted April 6, 2025 Hi all, 30 hours in and I have to say this game is amazing! This is a useless post more or less - just sharing how much I'm enjoying the game and all of its various systems! Really fun to learn and it's great how so many of the game's systems provide a good starting point to learn about real life systems of the same kind. One thing that I have not yet overcome is the fear of monsters and wildlife. I've been killed too many times and I'm finding wildlife and especially monsters terrifying, especially when they sneak up on you or spawn behind you. I sometimes wish the game was more peaceful, but I guess this makes it more interesting and exciting. I used to play Minecraft years ago and had a lot of fun, but something was always missing. I'm happy to say that Vintage Story hit all the spots that Minecraft did not. Developers - amazing work!! 4
Per Edman Posted April 6, 2025 Report Posted April 6, 2025 I need to ask you something. I've had several multi-hundred hour worlds and I feel like it's been so long since I was new at the game that I'd kind of forgotten. Could you just write down a little bit about the things that seem weird to you, comparing Vintage story to other games you like? I guess monsters sneaking up on you could be one of the things. Does it feel like you can't tell when that's a risk? 1
HalfAxd Posted April 6, 2025 Report Posted April 6, 2025 Welcome to the sickness! Experiment with pits for protection, trapping/hunting... 1

I don't think that's something anyone ever quite overcomes in Vintage Story. The threats are properly threatening, so the moment you let your guard down is generally the moment you manage to die, often horribly. 1
Sertyu Posted April 7, 2025 Report Posted April 7, 2025 tip for fighting in the early game: use spears. tons of spears. you can easily kill bears by spamming spears 1

Does it feel like you can't tell when that's a risk? I can try! Things that are "weird": Eating raw food seems to do so little in terms of hunger! Gulping down berries by the dozen, eating entire wolves barely satisfies my character's endless hunger! Running away from a wolf or a bear and jumping into your base, just to close the door and realize that there are monsters inside your base is.. unsettling All the various noises you hear at nights are ... terrifying Last time I got killed by a bear - it was silent and without any warning. My hands were shaking and I had to stop playing for that night as I was too scared. I'm a mid 30s guy Once I went down into a cave and there were no monsters until I saw one. I turned around to run away and that's when I saw that a whole bunch of them spawned behind me. I had an absolute meltdown Taming water is hard. I'm trying to make a moat around my base and often the water doesn't want to "be still". It takes lots of trial and error I'm afraid of the coming winter and am uncertain if I'll be able to survive I'm afraid to go into the caves, although I know I need to, since I need metals I'm not sure if that's what you are after, but I hope that helps!

I'm actually getting a bit of PTSD from this game to be honest because of this: Peacefully gathering cattails. Hear growling. Two wolves jump out at me and kill me Walking around and collecting little stones. A bear silently runs up to me from behind and attacks me. I panic and bolt. Bear catches up. I die Dig out a single piece of gravel on the surface. Entire landscape collapses underneath me and I get swallowed up by a bottomless pit and die I head into my cellar. Open the door and close it behind me. I realize I'm not alone. I die in darkness. 2

Just need to survive long enough to use them and be able to spot the wildlife in between all the tall grass and bushes, which is INCREDIBLY hard, especially when they don't really make any noise, which is proper nightmare fuel!
CastIronFabric Posted April 7, 2025 Report Posted April 7, 2025 I got it in late Dec. its already top 3 of most played games of my life with no sign of changing my daily game (side note, I am retired so plenty of time). The game for me feels like a combination of Wurm and 7 Days to Die which happen to be my two most played games ever. 1
