wildforester Posted June 22, 2025 Report Posted June 22, 2025 Since 1.21 is tweaking world generation I decided to take a peek at what's different. My feel currently is that the world has become much flatter overall with no gradual changes in base height at all. While this could make elk travel easier, I don't think the feel of the world has benefitted from this. Personally, I think some types of world generation may just have to go or change. That world gen mainly being the small pockmarked type (like in photo 11 or 6) and that the world should have more height variation on a larger scale. I've taken a good few screenshots of the world gen and want to see what others think about these types of terrain, I have my thoughts in comments on each photo. Pointing out what I like and what makes a scene work/not work. Google drive link to the photos (to save my file upload limit) The seed is "wgtesting" or "1730375493" with all photos coming from the 1.21 pre for those wondering.
wildforester Posted June 22, 2025 Author Report Posted June 22, 2025 I didn't touch on boat travel, but I think the ocean percentage needs to be bumped up a little more, 80-95% (land coverage) seems to be a good number that doesn't interfere with the early game, but also allows for extensive boat travel in the later game with some canal building the higher the percentage is.
Thorfinn Posted June 23, 2025 Report Posted June 23, 2025 Agree with most of that, though I don't share your dislike for some of the terrain features. Much of what you call "difficult to traverse" are simply "difficult to traverse in a straight line." If you are willing to follow the contours, the lines on a topo map, most of those are not all that hard. And, really, when you are scouting for resources, you are better off covering a lot of ground and following the highest continuous contour you can. And, yes, 97.5% landcover is not nearly enough sea. It wasn't until June that I first encountered the ocean, and it turned out to be quite small. I had encountered much larger freshwater lakes by that time. 2

I disagree with this sentiment, at least for now. Aquatic content is still underwhelming at the moment, so adding large bodies of water that the player will have to navigate is probably going to add more frustration than fun since there's not much to do on the water. Once the aquatics have been fleshed out more(such as the upcoming coral reefs) and a proper fishing system implemented(so you have more reason to be out on the water), then increasing the water to land ratio makes more sense.
