Echo Weaver Posted August 15, 2025 Report Posted August 15, 2025 Now that I have my windmill power train working like a pro, I've hit the next hiccup in blissful Vintage Story progression -- the wind speed changes from Gale to Light Breeze and back in a matter of seconds. This doesn't seem terribly immersive, and it makes using automated tools annoying. There are some days in the Real World where wind goes from everything to nothing constantly, but more often days are windy or not. If I were mucking with the vanilla game, I'd want to make the randomizer more constrained in how much it can change the wind speed at a time. Is there a mod that makes wind speed change less often? 1
LadyWYT Posted August 15, 2025 Report Posted August 15, 2025 I don't know about a mod, but you can change various things about the weather by using a command: https://wiki.vintagestory.at/List_of_server_commands/weather Looks like you can also toggle the pattern changes off. In any case, I'd wager that whenever you actually need to use your power train, just set the wind pattern to something sufficiently strong and let it rip. 1
Krougal Posted August 15, 2025 Report Posted August 15, 2025 Yeah, there used to be a wind mod, it was geared for realistic sailing, I forget what it was called, or if it still works. I notice it too, or at least I feel like when I am out running around it is always gale force winds and the second I want to grind or hammer something, it dies. Otherwise, like @LadyWYT said, /weather setw storm FTW. 1
xXx_Ape_xXx Posted August 16, 2025 Report Posted August 16, 2025 @Krougal The mod you're thinking of is either Simple Wind Direction or Pelagus Wind, with the latter actually updated just 5 days ago. Optionally you could just write a mod to replace the wind patterns. They are found in assets/game/config/windpatterns and contain json files for all the various wind speeds and their settings. 3 1

Seems like this is the correct attitude -- when the right weather happens, jump on it, but it doesn't work. It seems like you just have to start smithing and deal with whatever wind you're handed. 19 hours ago, LadyWYT said: I don't know about a mod, but you can change various things about the weather by using a command: https://wiki.vintagestory.at/List_of_server_commands/weather Looks like you can also toggle the pattern changes off. I really don't want to just cheat the weather to whatever is most convenient for me. I'm more hoping to be able to make the weather patterns change more gradually. 8 hours ago, xXx_Ape_xXx said: @Krougal The mod you're thinking of is either Simple Wind Direction or Pelagus Wind, with the latter actually updated just 5 days ago. Pelagus Wind says it does not affect windmills. Bummer. I'll take a look at the windpatterns config, but Simple Wind Direction contains this remark: "Most other things (like windmills, dust and smoke particles, etc.) are hardcoded to the vanilla direction and too much to change without a more serious attempt." That sounds ominous to me regarding the amount of effort involved.

I stopped using it because of that, and it was just confusing to have basically 2 wind systems in effect. Was also when the sailboat was just a mod. 1
Krougal Posted August 16, 2025 Report Posted August 16, 2025 (edited) Ok, now speaking of wind, I am suddenly noticing today since RC5 that it says hurricane, yet my windmills are not turning. It could just be a display bug with the mod (I seem to notice all of them have been unreliable lately, although I have 2 different mods that both agree), since if i do a setw it seems to work for a bit. This is twice though, granted I am not sitting around watching my windmills most of the time. Edited August 16, 2025 by Krougal 1

Winter, though, that is the time for smithing. Particularly if you build on a mountaintop, it's almost always gale or better. I kind of feel badly when I run out of blooms or ingots to turn into plates, because I hate seeing all that wasted potential. Sometimes I pull the anvils when I'd doing something else like cooking, just to not get the reminder of what a loser I am for not having enough materials.
FayeKat Posted August 16, 2025 Report Posted August 16, 2025 (edited) I think this might be an RC5 bug. I've had no natural wind at all since the update, and using /weather setw storm only seems to get me about 2 or 3 minutes of wind power before immediately going to zero again, and then the command seems to do nothing until I leave and re-enter the world. What I posted is, yes. It's been reported by other people as well on the tracker. 3
