Haven’t seen anyone call him anything but Dave… this caught me off guard.

I didn't learn of the Dave name until after I already started calling him Geoffery amongst my friend group because he's like a big eldritch Giraffe, and we thought of Toys R Us.

Good question. Last RC update broke the worldgen, causing glitched terrain on the borders with previously generated chunks. It should be fixed by now, but there's no telling whether it truly works as intended or not; one of the reasons these versions shouldn't be used as a base to move from towards release with your generated worlds, as they often carry over all the bugs. Albeit there is an ability to re-generate terrain afterwards with the new worldgen commands, it often comes at a cost of losing your creations... or just does not work at all. Hence, it's best to wait for the release, RC's are only meant for testing and to showcase new features.

Thank you for the safety advices. I never play release candidates on the permanent world. My concern is about the effects of the STABLE 1.21 on a permanent world.

Tyron will warn us what could go amiss if we don't start a new world.   The 1.18 came with a very stern warning of jarring terrain features if contuing a 1.17 world.  A similar warning came with 1.19 and using commands to import the RA to a pre 1.19 world.

Since I haven't seen such warnings this time 'round (yet), I doubt there'll will be an issue with continuing a pre 1.21 world.

If nothing went wrong, it should be fine now. Another good thing is a lot of slightly outdated popular mods seem to be working fine as well, despite message warnings. If you play with more than a couple mods, I'd recommend checking the game on a test world first to see if everything loads fine and there's no potential crashes.

I think you misunderstand me again while kindly trying to be helpful. I am not asking whether chunk smoothing is fixed, I am asking whether the changes to world gen settings are forced on old worlds. My world is in year 16, I know about mod safety.

I believe they are, but I can't say for 100% certain. In any case, I would make backups of old worlds before porting them to 1.21, just in case.

Based on Tyron warning of jarring transitions when he overhauled terrain generation in 1.18, I can confirm that for new chunks the current world gen for the version being played will be used to create new terrain.  In some cases it could create some very ludicrous transitions from old world gen algorithms to new world gen algorithms.

For updating from 1.20 to 1.21 that shouldn't be an issue since Tyron has not issued similar dire warnings as with the 1.18 update.
