WinnieTaylor Posted September 22, 2025 Report Posted September 22, 2025 When on large bodies of water, sometimes I can't get back on land and appear to be struck offshore. I've read that VS does not have tides. Is it a temporal storm? What am I missing? Sometimes I am killed by another player, but I play standalone. I never see any other players. Also, I get requests to allows LAN players, does this mean I'm making it a LAN game? What don't I understand? Sometimes the game freezes. A rotating circle appears. Usually starts working again after a minute or so. But sometimes I have to restart the game. Just things I have noticed. I haven't analyzed the logs, the game is enough of a challenge. Not a big deal. I obviously like VS, I've played over 780 hours.

Sailboats can be a bit finicky sometimes regarding boarding/disembarking. Otherwise, if you mean that you swim/sail out into a body of water and have trouble finding the opposite shoreline...it's probably just a really big lake, or even an ocean, especially if you changed world generation to give you a world with more water. 2 hours ago, WinnieTaylor said: Sometimes I am killed by another player, but I play standalone. To my knowledge, you have to actively choose to open your own game to LAN via the pause menu; it's not access that can be requested by other players. If you're getting death messages about getting killed by another player in singleplayer, that sounds like a bug. In which case, what were you doing at the time of death? My best guess there is that you somehow managed to damage yourself, and the game treated it as damage from another player, hence the weird death message. 2 hours ago, WinnieTaylor said: Sometimes the game freezes. In this case, it sounds like your graphics settings are set higher than what your computer's hardware can handle, or that you've installed more mods than your hardware can handle. It could be a bug--checking the logs should show whether or not there's anything goofy going on--but settings and mods are generally the first suspects.
WinnieTaylor Posted September 23, 2025 Author Report Posted September 23, 2025 Now I am getting slow or no response from anything I try to do. Among many, one example is trying to open or close reed baskets. Also having the same issues trying to use this forum. Don't know if it's issues with my pc, network or Vintage Story. This didn't happen before I installed the latest release 1.21.1. This game is tough enough as is, but I'm considering not playing anymore, which is sad because I really like VS, but I'm starting to think I'm wasting my time.
Thorfinn Posted September 23, 2025 Report Posted September 23, 2025 (edited) Does your 'puter act like that with older versions, too? [EDIT] Oh, I had a system with marginal ram. 16, I think, but might have been 8, I don't recall. But it absolutely could not handle the game and a browser simultaneously. Since most browsers do not shut down "clean", I had to cold-boot and go straight into VS. Mods can add a serious load to your machine, too, particularly those with large atlas changes. There are a lot of machines out there that cannot handle things like Wildcraft, for example. I'd start by doing as @LadyWYT suggests -- start by setting your graphics at minimum, and play for 5-10 minutes, then nudge it up a notch and see if that's what's causing the issue. WinnieTaylor Posted September 23, 2025 Author Report Posted September 23, 2025 Didn't change any world generation settings. I don't use a boat or raft, I swim. I can see the shore, but I never get there. My PC should not have problem with high graphic settings. I'm having the same issue just trying to use this forum. This is too much trouble just to play an already difficult video game. VS encourages posting concerns or issues in their discussion groups, but when I do, I get the impression they don't care.

Try rebooting your pc and see if that helps. If everything runs smoothly after a reboot, it's very possible you've run into a memory leak somewhere, which can easily tank performance even on beefier hardware.
WinnieTaylor Posted September 24, 2025 Author Report Posted September 24, 2025 It was my mouse. Interesting, I didn't know a defective mouse could cause a PC to quit responding. Just thankful that it wasn't a north Korean hacker. But everyone knows south Korean hackers are ok, but I doubt there are any of those. 2 1
