Trex_Crazy Posted December 3, 2025 Report Posted December 3, 2025 So how does the game calculate temperature? Last I played was 1.21.1 so idk if its changed since but I had a large 3x3 hlshaft in a mountain (for a windmill) but it wasn't covered, just had the wooden axel in the middle. And despite it being the dead of winter and -10 outside it didn't effect my character while in the mechanical room. So how does the game determine outside/inside, temp etc.

Maelstrom Posted December 3, 2025 Report Posted December 3, 2025 Outside is anything that isn't a recognized room, cellar, greenhouse or cave. The first three basically have to be 14x14 or less with walls being a slab or more in material. Certain conditions distinguish between those three. Caves I'm not sure about but the very basics are that you are underground with an entrance to the surface. I'm sure the internal cave temp is affected by Y level, but I do not know how much of an effect that has (plus I could be completely wrong about this aspect of cave temp). 1

I get that rooms protect you from the cold, but I'm curious about how the cave detection works. I've also noticed NOT being as cold in my mostly enclosed windmill room even though it is not technically a room with a hole for the axle. Though this room still increased my hunger rate beyond a true room. I suspect the game might have a concept of a partial room or if you're exposed to wind directly or not?
Maelstrom Posted December 3, 2025 Report Posted December 3, 2025 Am I correct in picturing the room in question has been dug out of the ground?

I build with dirt, but all my rooms are above ground except the cellar. And only the cellar plays "cave music" so I know that's a factor. EDIT: I should clarify that the room in question was initially a pile of dirt that I cleared out then built with rammed earth. so it MIGHT count as underground? Edited December 3, 2025 by Vexxvididu
