EmperorPingu Posted January 17 Report Posted January 17 (edited) I'm getting obsessed with deep sea, alien looking, thalassophobia inducing creepers. Rather than bang on about it, I figured I'd show you a bunch of photos as inspiration for the kind of mobs and aesthetics I think would look nice in the games oceans. Got any other suggestions? 1. The Bigfin Squid Sightings have been recorded at depths of 6k+ metres. Their tenticles can grow up to 8 metres long. 2. Black Devil Anglerfish 3. Pelican Eel 4. Barreleye Fish 400 - 2500m. About 15cm in length. 5. Chironex Fleckeri (Australian Box Jellyfish) Tenticles up to 3m in length. Lives in Shallow waters, extremely dangerous. 6. Colossal Squid Estimated lengths of up to 14m. Range can vary by lifecycle stage - larvea being 20m-500m, juveniles being about 600m, and adults exceeding depths of 1000m often more than 2000m. There aren't really any good photos out there owing to it's rarity so here's a juvenile and a size comparison (although I think the human is a little big in this picture). 7. Giant Oarfish 8. Goblin Shark Live at depths greater than 100m but sightings have been confirmed at 2000m. About 3.1m in length. 9. Manta Ray Usually inhabit Pelagic (mid) regions, but are often sighted near the surface or shallow depths, but have also been recorded with dives exceed 1200m. Wingpspans can reach 7m. 10. Ghost Shark I could seriously go on and on but the point is a richer aquatic life would be lit. Edited January 17 by EmperorPingu 4 1

Yeah great list! You know they got a few fish in the game already - and baracudas - titan triggerfish, and pufferfish, and coelacanth, but it's like their behaviours haven't been programmed in yet :0 Oh the Arapaima looks cool. Reminds me a bit of the alligator gar. Also gotta get some of those collosaa catfish (Wels Catfish especially). Sawfish 1
LadyWYT Posted January 17 Report Posted January 17 Just now, EmperorPingu said: You know they got a few fish in the game already - and baracudas - titan triggerfish, and pufferfish, and coelacanth, but it's like their behaviours haven't been programmed in yet :0 Not just their behaviors...the models could use a bit of tweaking too, I think. A lot of them seemed to be just tweaks of the salmon model, which is fine for some fish but not for fish like barracuda and triggerfish, which have some more unique silhouettes. Even the poor salmon doesn't really look like a salmon--it doesn't have a pointy snout! Not that the models we have currently are bad...they just aren't very good matches for the fish they're supposed to be in some cases.
Monkeylord Posted January 17 Report Posted January 17 Very cool aditions! I would also add Humboldt squids as they are really really cool and infamous for attacking (and even killing) divers in packs 1

Differences in buoyancy (benthic vs pelagic), predatory behavior (especially barracudas) and schooling for some of the smaller buggers would be nice to see. Definitely also hoping for more freshwater love too, since I usually play in-land near freshwater instead of venturing to the coast so for the longest time ever I never knew there were already so many species in the game. 2
LadyWYT Posted January 17 Report Posted January 17 I'll add lion's mane jellies and siphonophores to the mix, as well as tripod fish and telescope fish. 1

Telescope fish looks perfect. Lives at about 2000m below sea level but can be found between 500-3000m. About 20cm in length but they look amazing.
EmperorPingu Posted January 17 Author Report Posted January 17 @marmarmar34 Could I tempt you with a Sarcastic Fringehead? (yes this is real) 2
LadyWYT Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 I completely forgot to mention comb jellyfish! Those would be really cool to have as well. A nice little light show for the deep sea. 2
Monkeylord Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 Big boulders spawning in beaches and underwater could be a great way to introduce crabs, mussels, sea snails and barnacles too. And a great way to add stonefish! 3
OBAMFSpike Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 The other night I was diving with my night vision on...... Im here representing plankton. 1
RationallyParanoid Posted January 19 Report Posted January 19 I'd love to see freshwater and oceanic versions of eels and rays personally I want the water noodles and water pancakes please and thank you 1
BlackMoonHowling Posted January 21 Report Posted January 21 That is one thing i would be most excited to see in a future update, more aquatic life both fresh water and ocean. There's so many interesting aquatic creatures and the idea of being able to encounter a colossal squid on a dive would be crazy! the latest update is a good start on the seas but I definitely have a freshwater fish shaped hole in my heart right now lol. Another cool addition would be freshwater fish spawning times, like the salmon runs in Alaska where for a month or so the fish are extremely prevalent and can be caught in high number to preserve but it takes some planning and forethought to make a set up to catch them in large numbers. 2
