rvenson Posted 8 hours ago Report Posted 8 hours ago (edited) I was looking for a permanent light source that could repel monster spawns near my base. The torch holder seems like a direct improvement, since it has more light intensity than oil lamps and less than lanterns. However, I didn’t expect the crafting cost to be so high. I already had to put in some effort to find zinc, but needing four brass ingots to make just two torch holders is insane. At that point, I can go straight to lanterns, since they have higher light intensity and only cost one plate of any ingot (even though they also require flax and beeswax, which aren’t a big deal to find). I hope we can get some tweaks to the light source progression, as it seems to be a major part of base building. I don't even bother to have expensive lanterns because I really like the fact that you can't light the entire world forever. Edited 8 hours ago by rvenson
marmarmar34 Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago As you progress you'll be drowning in copper, and the helve hammer will make plates effortlessly. It's mostly about esthetics, I personally find them prettier than oil lanterns which are considerably more economic. I also like to nab every single torch holder I find in ruins, they make for beautiful rough light spots alongside your pathways.

Torches can help mitigate monster spawns, but are easily outclassed by lanterns. They do, however, have a reddish light that lanterns do not when it comes to aesthetics. Torches are also able to easily start fires, which is something lanterns can't do, so it's useful to place torch holders near your forges, fireplaces, and other things that you intend to be lighting with relative frequency.
pigfood Posted 5 hours ago Report Posted 5 hours ago Torch holders are fairly common in ruins (surface and caves). I found something like 20 in my current game. I've never actually crafted one. They are very nice as ignition source for pit kilns, forges, bloomeries, ... Beyond the early game, I'm not using them for lighting. The range is too small.
Crowveil Posted 3 hours ago Report Posted 3 hours ago I'm new to the game but I though only those aged torch holders keep torches from not burning out can wooden torch holders do that ?? if so omg I could have saved so much time by not crafting so many lanterns
ArgentLuna Posted 47 minutes ago Report Posted 47 minutes ago (edited) Lanterns are great to have lots of but you'll want a few Torch holders near places where you'll be lightning things on fire ~ Kitchen, Pit kiln room and Blacksmith are all places i have one. Then you get the atmospherics of having them flanking door and gateways etc. Once you have found Lead its very easy to make a lot of molybdochalkos lanterns and with new smol lanterns coming they wont be a chunky about the place.
