I've easily got 1000+ hours in this game, yet there is tons I haven't actually done... what's on your "to-do" list?

I dunno and I haven't been brave enough to go find out. 😂

Trader caravan.

I started one world, and was almost immediately attacked by a bear, but the trader caravan near spawn gave me some breathing space. It was camping me though, every time I went to step outside it would charge at me. I was able, however, to get off hits. It was tough as the reach of the bear was massive, but it's definitely doable. I didn't kill it, but I managed to hit it with my bare (bear, ha!) hands about 10 or 12 times. Enough to get it running away long enough for me to exit stage left.

While I never actually took the bear out, I believe it's totally possible to smack it's furry head enough times to take it out. Every hit was a bit of a gamble, and I took two good swipes which knocked me down to near death. At first I was like, "hell, yeah, take that", and dreaming of bear armour, pelts and meat right from spawn, but that second wallop sobered me up from being 'loot drunk' pretty quickly.

I saw you wrote you wanted to kill a bear, unarmed, but does it need to be done with honour or will some scrappy cheese do it for you?

I love my scrappy cheese and you know the story would be told in the funny story thread, but...it's just not the same as doing it legit. 😂 Generally when I do that kind of thing in the game, it's a bit spontaneous and something I roll with just to see if I can actually manage it, rather than utilizing cheese or coming back later with better gear and an actually good plan.

Where it tends to get the most interesting is when the creature tries to flee. Most larger animals are faster than the player, so once they start to run it's usually not possible to physically catch them. A few well-placed rocks might be in order in that case.

I agree with you, you want to be in the middle of the fight feeling like this..

...not just taking swipes at it from the safety of a trader caravan.

While I do not have nearly that many hours, and admittedly I have first hand experienced relatively little of the game, I do have two goals I would like to achieve.

The first is i want to build a massive mountain castle complex, probably more accurate to call it a palace city. The amount of time and tools that will be sacrificed to the great work alone will be an achievement lol.

The second is to make a collection of almost all the things lol. One of each ore cluster, maybe just the bountifuls, and likely one of every stone. I do not feel a drive to collect the butterflies, but i would not deny them an exhibit in the collection if I happened upon them. May even do some of the rock types complete with some simple information on the rock type and where it is found. Having a botanical section.

It's worse than that, I go through phases of binging games, so I'll have a month without it, then easily throw up 40 hours within a week. VS isn't my worst binged game either!

Ive got around 300 hours. I only play on 30 days. On my todo list is:

  • Finish two years of a single world, and
  • Stop being a little ***** and go caving. But it's so scary lol.

I play with the dungeon mod, so it's even more scary.

What are your other binge games?

serious question and I do not mean to ask this to be sarcastic.

What is the difference for you between playing this game and what you have just described about and lets say playing DayZ or even Arma 3 or something similar? What is the 'differentiator' so to speak that draws you here instead of there? I am actually curious, I ask this not to cause and argument

Well you didn't ask me but I'm going to answer anyway. DayZ is a zombie survival game that, to my knowledge, is exclusively multiplayer. Arma 3 is an FPS that also, to my knowledge, is mostly multiplayer. I don't like zombie games and I'm not really a fan of FPS. I don't play a lot of multiplayer games these days since when I am playing multiplayer, I prefer to play with people I already know, or that are friends with people I already know.

Vintage Story does have some horror elements, but the primary focus is just fairly realistic survival in a fairly realistic world, with a cool little story and some steampunk horror elements that remain in the background. There's plenty of room for building neat stuff and just having fun exploring the world, or doing whatever else I care to do. Both DayZ and Arma though have pretty singular focuses.

So the reason you select one video game over the other is primary its backdrop world/lore and less because of the mechanics?

you can ignore that question, I just wanted to put it out there, I will try to refrain from turning it into a debate by accident.

Regarding the action pack part of starting a game in VS. In a 200 hour run on one save I would estimate that makes up about 5% of total game play, maybe 10%

No, rather the two go hand in hand. If I don't like the mechanics, I'm not going to bother with the game even if I like the lore. If I like the look of the mechanics, but don't like the setting/lore, I'm also not going to bother. For example, I enjoy the lore of Divinity: Original Sin, but ended up hating the sequel mostly due to the awful mechanics. Valheim is a similar example, in that the lore was interesting but I just don't like the mechanics enough to stay invested in the game. I like the mechanics of Fallout: New Vegas, but otherwise don't really like the game since the setting and lore just aren't that interesting to me.

Edit: When it comes to Vintage Story, I enjoy both the lore and mechanics, thus it's a game I frequently play.

Say within the last decade, probably things like DayZ and 7 Days to Die which are both top of my current Steam profile, both easily 10K+ hours. That said, both have been out for over a decade.Off of steam, Rimworld is a particularly difficult game for me to stop playing, it's just so f*cking moreish. That and, perhaps in contrast to the other games I play, FIFA, but only the offline manager format (RtG). In fact, I find myself so drawn towards those last two that I have uninstalled both of them for fear I relapse!

There are others, for example I recently got into SurrounDead, and sank 400 hours into it, and I'm waiting for it to update to 0.8 so I can probably drop another 100.
