That does indeed sound fun. It's just not this game.

That's not for you to decide.

Strictly speaking, he's right. It's not this game. It could be this game, sure, if the devs decided to go that route. But at present, it is not.

Just as useless of an argument. It's a thread discussing this topic where people throw around ideas about what could be, so of course it's not a current state of the game thing. And as far as the game itself goes, it's early access. It's not going to be done in a long time, with many more features and content to come that's not currently part of the game - including things he may disagrees with. Pretty sure this is not the first time where he tries to be dismissive of me and others either.

You don't need to get so defensive.

Personally, I think it's a terrible idea for the base game, but it would be a fun change of pace as a mod. This is the kind of idea which legitimately is what (I understand) @CastIronFabric wants to avoid -- changing from a mostly freeform sandbox to a progression game where the devs gatekeep how you play the game.

If you could keep the tech tree sufficiently flat, and minimize the effects of RNG and gameplay style, it could be fun. But if it requires exploration from someone who is primarily interested in building, or vice versa, where in order to progress, an explorer must chisel 1,000 blocks? Or has to kill 500 levels of rusties?

People please stop. The reason why I posted here is because I was confused as to why certain things in the game were gated already, Looking for these things is kinda fun. Makes exploring and collecting stuff in game worthwhile. To me at least. These are my preferences. I would rather people that do not like the idea just ignore it. This is why i created a new thread in the mod section. If you have anything to add if you are interested go there and post some ideas. I would be grateful. To those in here beating each other up whose stick is bigger..... don't. All we are doing is making progressively bigger sticks.

can I offer some advice?

Given your questions I think its safe to assume you have not yet played the game. I would suggest playing the game for a good amount of time and see how the flow feels first before investing too much time in ideas of how to change it.

Its like how people were complaining about the changes in spear damage for the new release candidate update without having played it to see how the entire system feels together and as it turns out at least with copper spears on regular hunting the amount of hits required was EXACTLY the same

What gives you this impression?

Where was I complaining?

I am unclear how one could be playing the game and not know that how the progression works. I am not saying that as a criticism, I just do not understand how that could work. To explain more, its not like we are talking about a specific aspect of the game, I mean we are talking about the overall game architecture.

Are there any mods available that lock knowledge behind books, scrolls, blueprints?

Yo OP. I have "Better Ruins" installed, which includes some 20ish blueprints used to craft (mostly decorative) items that can't normally be crafted, as well as some blueprints which are cheaper alternatives of vanilla blueprints. It doesn't exactly lock tech progression behind looting the blueprints, but it does provide some creative rewards for exploration and the feeling of gathering ancient knowledge used to construct the ruins you see around you.
