There should be a system to detect how deep you are in a body of water, and the player should become more buoyant (harder to swim down, easier to swim up) with increasing pressure. Water already makes players freeze faster, so there should also be a danger of temperature shock when entering a really cold body of water from a warm location. I like the idea of having various stinging cnidarians in coral reefs or at least just a few types of jellyfish. Most importantly of all, the players lungs should explode when ascending from deep waters too quickly.

All of these are great ideas, making Diving a real hazard is what uncompromising Survival means.
Also we need deep sea Drifters that come to the surface during temporal storms.

I also think we should have Diving Bells, there are plenty of historical records that suggest humanity would be able to figure that out.

Why a Diving Bell, Tyron might ask... well what if we placed a story dungeon at the bottom of the seafloor??

Status effect: You have the bends

Have brought up the idea of diving suits or bells in the past with friends, especially as I like playing on big ocean worlds and a lot of ruins end up on the sea floor. Would be a fun addition, especially with a few water-related challenges to encounter.

Could be a neat way to do ocean exploration, have special ocean-only ruins (shipwrecks??) with decent rewards or progression but lock them behind having appropriate gear and preparation. Maybe something about being underwater prevented certain things from being affected by the rot so you can scavenge old world stuff there you couldn't elsewhere? Or maybe the best quality subterranean ruins were built under the oceans.

Oh no... someone already suggested a diving bell and that thread did NOT go well.

Spoiler: it was me who suggested it. :D

The bells, Mason! What do they mean?!

I am all for adding diving bells.

Also, I'm pretty sure there is a depth where the human body begins to sink instead of float. So you would have to struggle to swim up or be forever lost to the sea.

Apparently due to the air in the lungs becoming compressed.
