Ampling Posted Monday at 10:53 PM Report Posted Monday at 10:53 PM (edited) Hi! Very new here and very much looking forward to the countless hours I'm about to put in it. I love me some additional challenge and plan on heading into a Wilderness Survival world once the update drops on stable. The only thing that I can see halting my (very overblown) hype for this coming adventure is the fact that I'm not sure how I'll progress through story chapters without a map? I haven't been spoiled too much yet, but I know that a certain trader can give you places to go in the form of map markers. Does he give you a direction or something so that you can orient yourself there without a map? Or is Wilderness Survival just not made for that kind of experience? I'd like to keep my settings as "default" as possible so enabling the map is just not something I really want to do. If there really is no direction given other than the map markers, I may just have to go with the regular survival mode instead. Not an issue at all, but I'd rather know now than notice once I'm a week deep in a Wilderness Survival playthrough! Thank you Edit: I'll be going regular Survival since I just noticed Microblock Chiseling is also defaulted off in Wilderness Survival! I'll still leave the post up in case the original question gets answered and some people wondering the same thing stumble on it later on! Edited Monday at 11:20 PM by Ampling
LadyWYT Posted Monday at 11:27 PM Report Posted Monday at 11:27 PM First off, welcome to the forums and the game! 29 minutes ago, Ampling said: Edit: I'll be going regular Survival since I just noticed Microblock Chiseling is also defaulted off in Wilderness Survival! For what it's worth, you can always customize settings and turn on certain features that are otherwise turned off by default for certain difficulties. Many settings, like chiseling and the minimap, can be toggled on/off after world creation via console commands. 31 minutes ago, Ampling said: I haven't been spoiled too much yet, but I know that a certain trader can give you places to go in the form of map markers. I've not played Wilderness Survival, but from what I know about it, the player needs to use the map item to check how close they are to the desired location, rather than use the map item once to mark the location on their minimap. It's basically just playing a version of "hot or cold". If you're new to the game though, I would personally recommend playing the Standard difficulty for a little while to get the hang of the game's basics before jumping into Wilderness Survival. Wilderness Survival is rather unforgiving and while it's certainly possible to learn to play on this difficulty, it may be a little more difficult than what many new players find fun given how steep Vintage Story's learning curve is. 1
Zane Mordien Posted Monday at 11:46 PM Report Posted Monday at 11:46 PM In addition to what LadyWYT said you also have to build markers to help you find your way back home since the map won't return you home. Simple packed dirt pillars will suffice with a block on top pointing the way you came from. I also recommend you burn your way to the story location so you can easily spot the path back. 51 minutes ago, Ampling said: I'll be going regular Survival I'm glad you decided to play regular at first. I'm glad you decided to play regular at first. I highly recommend learning the game mechanics for jumping into wilderness survival. I played through the starting phase a bunch of times but had self-imposed myself a permadeath rule (since I thought I would have to restart a world anyway once the update drops) I'd say I'm pretty comfortable up to the start of the copper age, but I do understand that it's basically the start of the game still lol Having said that, I'm going to hop on the 1.22 rc10 client and just start playing! By the time I get to any of the new features, the last few polish fixes will probably have come out already! Fingers crossed it all goes fine and I don't have to restart any time soon! 1

This will also help you get used to the new berry bushes and other new mechanics that were added; berry bushes especially, since they've received brand new visuals and cultivation mechanics(which didn't exist before).
