Lithembia Posted May 14 Report Posted May 14 I was digging a mine shaft and deep down started to hear a sound like millstones grinding. I did not explore it because I was wearing only leather armor and am a coward anyway. Because I am a coward, I have not visited the Resonance Archives, and have no idea about most of the horrors awaiting me in the deep. I have wiped out a corrupt locust nest and once I saw a bell for a fraction of a second (because I ran away), that is about it. I don't want to know exactly what this sound is coming from, but I am curious if: It is something that will remind me of our mortality, the uncaring disregard of the cosmos, and the pain we bring upon ourselves through our own arrogance. It is a terrifying thing that will likely result in my destruction. It is a horror beyond human or seraph understanding and beyond even the restraints of our physical realm, and attempting to discover it will only lead to despair and insanity.

If the sound is constant, it's possible you may have stumbled across it and are hearing the ambience. Of course, it's also possible that your stability(if temporal mechanics are enabled) has dropped low enough for the warning ambience to settle in. If the sound isn't constant, it's probably just locusts. 1 hour ago, Lithembia said: It is something that will remind me of our mortality, the uncaring disregard of the cosmos, and the pain we bring upon ourselves through our own arrogance. I mean, depending on one's perception of things, the above possibilities don't rule out any of these results. The game is pretty good about spooking players, even if they already know what to expect.

Sounds like the audio that plays when your temporal stability drops too low. 6 minutes ago, LadyWYT said: If the sound is constant, it's possible you may have stumbled across it and are hearing the ambience. The sound only really plays within the bounds of the archives which are protected from the player doing things like mining and whatnot, otherwise, the generic underground sounds will play. Also the RA sounds don't remind me of millstones grinding until you've fetched the mcguffin and done the thing with it.

I mean they don't really remind me of that either, but I wanted to make sure all the bases were covered, y'know? For those wondering what could make those kinds of noises. 4 minutes ago, Teh Pizza Lady said: generic underground sounds I did forget about these though. I'm guessing the generic underground ambience probably isn't responsible, as it's rather obvious, but you never know.
Lithembia Posted May 14 Author Report Posted May 14 (edited) It's not the underground ambience or low stability noises, it's something out there behind the rock. I can go down and it gets louder until I reach a certain point, and then it starts to diminish as I go deeper. I went back to check again and it's still there at about 25-30 above the mantle. There's a grinding noise, this time mixed with occasional tapping, and I can hear a shiver too. I want to dig looking for it but am also scared to try. I haven't gotten the location of the Resonance Archives yet and I think it doesn't exist until then. I wonder if it's another type of ruins. Maybe I'll come back after I have iron chain mail. Edit: Guys, I discovered lava! I've never actually found it before. So put it under 4. Actually pretty mundane, although I think I heard a bell in there. Edited May 14 by Lithembia

Nice find! 3 hours ago, Lithembia said: I haven't gotten the location of the Resonance Archives yet and I think it doesn't exist until then. Oh it definitely exists. As far as I'm aware, story locations like these are generated at world creation, or upon first loading a world after an update, in the event that new story locations are added and nothing is blocking the spawn. It is possible to find locations like this without using a map, but unlikely, since some of them are rather well-hidden. 3 hours ago, Lithembia said: I wonder if it's another type of ruins. Kind of. Story locations are just that--unique locations that are important to the main story of the game. They tend to be larger and more detailed than the average ruin, and often contain special loot, puzzles, and hazards. Also worth noting that if a location is described as dangerous, it's a very good idea to take the warning seriously. 1

I'm remembering the time I found the RA buried 5 blocks underground because the area that it generated in was heavily undulated terrain. Even with a map to the location I don't think I would have found it without popping into creative mode and verifying its location.
