ComsmicAggressor Posted May 14 Report Posted May 14 I know this topic has been brought up several times before but I feel that I have to get my own 2 cents in about it. The map is one of the most powerful and useful tools in vintage story and the recent addition of defaulting to previus map icons for certain color-icon combinations makes it even more convenient. But the game simpily lacks most of the icons I need so that I end up using the same few icons for everything. To be more specific the game could really use icons for 2 or 3 icons denoting ores, active mines, worked out mines, a bunch of random symbols, each individual type of animal, towns, dungeons, late game lore content, specific kinds of traders, boat docks, fish, and basicly anything that is in the game already, players are likley to make, or that is likley to be added to the game in future. I am also not very satisfied with the color options. To be more spefic It would be nice if there were more variations on red, and yellow. Plus the ability to add a differently colored boarder around those icons would allow them to work better when using real color world map, while simultaniusly dubling the amount of info that can be shown by the icon alone. 7
ComsmicAggressor Posted May 14 Author Report Posted May 14 It is also worth noting that the map itself could use some work, things like filtering by marker type and color, having a button to recenter on the player, having a list for pinned locations to center on, and loading faster would all be appreciated. 2
cjameshuff Posted May 14 Report Posted May 14 I'd really like a base icon and separate outlines/backgrounds and overlays with their own colors. So you could have an icon for mines, color coded with their main contents, and outline the active ones. Or you could mark all caves, and add an X overlay as you explore them, or a plus to indicate multiple things of interest. This would effectively multiply the number of icons available, while reducing the number you actually have to deal with in the UI. Also, the ability to connect markers with lines would be very useful for plotting travel routes and annotating translocator links.
DeanF Posted May 17 Report Posted May 17 (edited) I want landform labels- a mountain peak symbol for naming mountains, a wave symbol (or maybe water droplet?) for naming water features, and something for naming valleys and depressions (not sure what symbol). I want to annotate that I live on Half-Moon Bay with Elephant Mountain to my north... There should probably be windmill and water wheel symbols. Likewise, a tipi symbol for campsites or small structures you've built that are less than a home base. I leave standardized 6x7 waystations everywhere, for example. An anchor symbol, for marking good landing sites for rafts, boats, and the sailboat. A question mark would be nice for doing map recon- as sort of a "What the hell is this?" on some map feature that you want to check out. And if we're doing that, then an exclamation point as a danger marker might be justifiable, perhaps even in a triangle like the European "Caution" traffic symbol, so that the color is easier to see. Alternatively, the circle-slash symbol might work. A symbol for a wolf and a bear have been requested by many people, but I'd rather just have a single generic symbol of a fanged mouth to represent any animal threat. Maybe a fish symbol, too. And honestly, I'd love what Simple Map Markers gives you- chemical element abbreviations. Perhaps as a toggleable option for those who don't like such things. Finally, what I hope is a helpful critique from someone with old eyes- the pickaxe symbol is too skinny to see the color easily. It should be crossed picks instead. Likewise, it might help to make the berries on the berry branch symbol a tad larger. Edited June 1 by DeanF 2
Heegrim Posted May 21 Report Posted May 21 Yeah we need a boat symbol now too. Or at least an entity marker like the elk has so I don’t forget where I parked it. 3
Heegrim Posted May 21 Report Posted May 21 A colour wheel would be nice too so we aren’t stuck with just the defaults. The default colours are kinda weird too. There are so many shades of blue that are almost identical. We definitely need more abstract symbols too. The 4 and 5-pointed stars are all we have and I end up using those for landmarks, points of interest, meteors, my boat, spawn, etc. The dot is what is used for prospecting so I never use that as it gets completely lost. 1
DeanF Posted May 22 Report Posted May 22 (edited) Hmm, I just learned that animal spawn areas persist. For instance, even if you deforest an area, the wolf spawn locations there will still spawn wolves. So maybe we do need animal markers? For marking hunting grounds, per se... A wolf and bear to mark danger zones, or maybe their paw prints or something, and then prey animals: a pig, a sheep/goat, a deer, etc. A fish symbol, for sure. Edited June 1 by DeanF
Deaderpan Posted May 28 Report Posted May 28 i would like to be able to group markers we place, and then toggle on and off those groups the same way we can toggle on and off prospecting points. for example I add a group to the side of the map, call it wild crops, every time i add a crop marker i add it by myself to the crop group. if i want to hide crop markers on the map i just click the group and they all vanish until i enable the group again. would even allow some icon reusability since at least we could group two of the same looking icons into two different groups 1
coolAlias Posted May 28 Report Posted May 28 I'd really like a way to toggle an "X" overlay on each marker, like in Valheim. For example, adding an "X" to a prospecting point that has been mined out or a wild fruit tree that has already been harvested this year. 1
Shoom Posted June 2 Report Posted June 2 I would really like a translocator tab in the map menu, say once you've stepped through a translocator, 2 pins show up automatically on the map with a line in-between, or alternatively let us draw lines on the map. Manually pinning translocators becomes a real headache once you need to use multiple ones in sequence to get to a desired location, or when there are multiple translocators in a small area. 1

Issue becomes when you forget to remove the marker and all your coastlines get cluttered with brown dots but you can't remember which one actually had the boat. For sure that's a skill issue though.

I'd like a more general ability to connect markers with lines, since it can be useful for marking other travel routes as well. 1 1

This actually brings up its own idea. Things that move such as players and boats should automatically have their own map markers. Mind you if you want some kind of competitive server that might be better limited to players you who specificly allow you to see there location and boats you own. 1
ComsmicAggressor Posted Saturday at 02:03 AM Author Report Posted Saturday at 02:03 AM Side note I was wondering why I was getting so many replies to this. Clearly either someone messed up or I talk much gooder than I though because this is the number 1 forum in suggestions.

It's based on how recently a post got a reply - all the lower posts haven't gotten replies in increasingly long times, and as soon as one does, then it jumps to the first spot in the list. The only way to have a post stay at the top is by having it pinned, but only the moderators / devs can do that. On the topic of map markers, as far as I know they're working on something. RedRam mentioned a while back in the Discord that they are at least working on new icons for the traders, since the wagon marker no longer makes sense. A more uniform spread of colours would be great though, same for translocator pins being visually linked. I also think the currently useless anchor item could be used to give the boat a map pin. Right now you can craft a stone anchor and put it inside your boat, but it serves no purpose. Edited Saturday at 04:02 AM by ifoz 1 1
PigeonK Posted Saturday at 05:38 AM Report Posted Saturday at 05:38 AM (edited) I second this so hard. I'd also love to see custom colors via a color wheel, and replacing the current color palate with your own custom colors. Maybe also a section to quickly choose common color/icon combos. Edit: Heegrim already suggested a color wheel, sorry for reiterating the idea. I also like Shoom's idea of being able to draw on the map, but not just for lines. I can imagine in multiplayer a group huddled around a shared map table drawing arrows, circles, lines, and writing text to plan an expedition or a raid on an enemy faction. runnybabbit Posted Sunday at 04:08 AM Report Posted Sunday at 04:08 AM lines would be useful for the standard brown-and-tan map to denote tectonic/rock boundaries as currently it's quite difficult to track which rock type is surfaced on the standard map.
