smokingice Posted May 17 Report Posted May 17 I have recently become a linux user. Im using Fedora KDE, and have a 4070 mobile. On the setting just below low,(im on my phone, and cant remember the name at the moment) I get about 30 fps avarage. I know im on a laptop, and i know Im using linux on an nvidia graphics card, but I would have expected the performance to be a little better. Is this what I should expect, or is there any particular thing or setting that would make a noticable performance boost for my setup? I know i can go in the settings and tweek it to get exactly what i want, I was just wondering if perhaps anyone else has done that tweeking for me. Thank you very much.
LadyWYT Posted May 17 Report Posted May 17 Welcome to the forums! Do you have a more complete list of PC specs, and are you using any mods, or just playing vanilla? Without a more complete list, it's hard to say what the bottleneck could be; as far as I can tell via the 4070 isn't terrible, but may not be strong enough to run the game at more than the minimum(or close to it). If mods are being used, they can easily add additional performance demands, although this does depend on which mods you use and how many. 20 minutes ago, smokingice said: is there any particular thing or setting that would make a noticable performance boost for my setup? The only general advice I can really give here is to play around with your settings until you're satisfied with the performance. Each system is different, as is each user, and what's suitable for one may not be suitable for another. If you have a lot of programs or other windows open in the background, you might try closing some of them before playing to free up system resources. 1
cyancodon Posted May 17 Report Posted May 17 I have a laptop with a 4060 running Arch Linux and it didn't have any performance issues on medium-high settings. Are you sure the game is actually using your GPU? Depending on your power settings the game could just be running on integrated graphics.
Farmore Posted Tuesday at 12:12 AM Report Posted Tuesday at 12:12 AM Hello! I also recently switched to Linux. I run Linux Mint Cinnamon with an NVIDIA graphics card and I have had no issues with VS, I'm able to run medium-high graphics with mods but you should really compare your GPU with the recommended specs for VS! I will say, if you are using NVIDIA with Linux for gaming, I dunno if I just mucked something up but expect to do a lot of troubleshooting, resetting your computer, and make sure your drivers and kernel are up to date! If you are having trouble running games you're going to have luck browsing some forums and asking folks there for help. Double check if you have anything running in the BG, make sure NVIDIA is running on performance mode and not power saving mode. I had an issue when I first downloaded VS on Linux that my FPS was really low but once I tinkered with my settings and updated my drivers it worked smoothly. There are also some performance mods (clientside) you can try running that slightly optimize the game more. I will say for gaming, I dunno what the issue is, but for other games I've had major issues with getting NVIDIA to work. I keep having to troubleshoot and reinstall my drivers because random things just keep failing. That's unfortunately part of the early Linux experience especially for gaming, but since VS runs natively on Linux it should be no problem. If you are having continuous FPS issues and lag, double check that your drivers are loading correctly.

Hey there, I'm using Arch Linux with a GeForce RTX 3060, so like doesn't apply here, but I just wanted to point out that your experience is atypical! If you keep your packages generally updated, most games should run without any tinkering and sometimes even enjoy a performance boost. It could be that Mint doesn't update their stuff fast enough to play nicely with all the bleeding edge nonsense games like to do. I really don't know but I just wanted you to know that you need not struggle so. There are many gaming-oriented distros out there these days. I know that for Vintage Story, I had to cap my FPS and my brother (who is on windows) had to turn off mouse smoothing before we got things running right. Definitely dig into settings and see if anything helps. 1

I looked around for a while, and I found a NVIDIA control panel, it doesnt really seem feature complete, but i found a setting to "Prefer Maximum Performance and it greatly improved the Performance" if anyone is using NVIDIA on Fedora, try that, Inshallah.

At least with Steam I've run all but one game successfully through Proton (it worked the first time I played but not the other times? still trying to figure that out) and with other games like VS I've also had to mess with settings. I've had a whirlwind of issues with this distro and keep having to troubleshoot really basic functions and a lot of it has come down to NVIDIA. At one point the OS just would not load and I spent like an hour trying to figure out why until I started tinkering with NVIDIA. I've gotten everything stable for the most part minus a getting my headphones to work but a lot of it has been waiting for updates or settings. For some reason I keep getting an error message on startup related to NVIDIA but then it appears to fix itself anyways so? I have genuinely no idea what's going on lmao. 1

I also get NVIDIA messages on startup on Mint, but they don't do anything. Also had the issue of a Steam game working the first time but not other times, fixed it by trying a different version of ProtonGE which you can install using the ProtonUp-Qt flatpak app. The ProtonDB site also helps a lot.
hstone32 Posted yesterday at 07:35 AM Report Posted yesterday at 07:35 AM Also on a Linux laptop with an NVIDIA GPU. What I've discovered is that my gpu is pretty much capable of handling all graphical settings at their highest value except shadows. Even with everything else turned all the way down, shadows still kill my performance.
