Howdy!
I am coming here with a question more so pertaining to the dev team of Vintage story.
I really love this game, but I am not who im asking this for. My bf himself has been is collage for many years now (About the grad next year!) getting his degree around coding and game design, Mainly knowing CS. He also had past Dev experience with a minecraft modding team!
(He is really great! And loves getting through lines of work! Hes also a neat and tidy coder!)
He even started some work as a Dev on the shadow realm server, and while he has been doing great work there. But it is proving to not be reliable work.

So I am wondering if Vintage story ever has openings for new team members? Or just about how they normally seek new team members?

But also if you know any ways people can still get dev experience and work around vintage story!

I Know modding teams are a thing! For servers especially like the Shadow realm. But if theres more or places to check out please let me know!

But I dont know too much about dev work...But I do know I love vintage story, So ive been trying to my best to find out info for him incase vintage story is a good route to try out!
If yall got any tips, suggestions, thoughts please let me know!

Welcome to the forums! I recall Tyron mentioning in an interview some time ago that getting heavily into the modding scene is a good idea for those who are serious about wanting to join the team someday. It's not a hard requirement to be a dev, nor is it a guarantee that it'll get you a job on the Vintage Story team, but creating and maintaining mods is a great way to showcase one's talent as well as shows that they're at least somewhat passionate about the community and game they're looking to develop for.

That being said, one doesn't need to be a dev to have an impact on the game. Bug hunting on the pre-releases and submissions of detailed bug reports on the Github can help the devs figure out what they need to fix. Modded content occasionally finds its way into the main game, typically with a few tweaks to ensure it fits the devs' vision, but there are also plenty of mods that don't fit the vision of the game at all but are still beloved by the community. The devs also pay attention to player feedback, both on the forums and Discord, so being involved in the community can offer opportunities to add constructive criticism/praise as well as help other players out with various stuff.

It's probably also worth cautioning that enjoying something as a hobby is quite different than working on it all day for a living. Not that the devs don't enjoy their work--they clearly do!--but working on a thing as a full-time job can dull interest due to overexposure. It's why wait staff often don't eat at the restaurants they work for; the food isn't bad but does lose its appeal if one is looking at it all day, every day.

Thank you!! He isnt super into vintage story like I am hahaha. (He havent even played on the server im in, he just devs and listens to my rambles about it) But I have been hopping to use my know how of the community to see what opportunity there could possibly be. Making my hyper fixation helpful hahaha
Modding does sound like a great bet to continue doing though I agree! Thank you for the info! Ill relay this to him for sure! Its very encouraging to hear!
I know he made a mod a bit ago and working on a second he will upload sometime. But Ill have to get onto him about making a social media and such so people can track his work better hahaha.

But yeah!! This is good stuff to know! And I know for sure I love contributing to the community too!

Just my two cents', but social media isn't everything, and a lack of social media could be valuable depending on the employer, given that social media can be a liability. It will be necessary to have a portfolio though, so potential employers can see your work.

I mean this with all due respect, but do make sure it's an opportunity he genuinely wants to pursue himself, and not just something you want him to pursue due to a higher interest in the game. I'm not saying he wouldn't be interested or wouldn't enjoy such an opportunity, just that it's possible he might prefer to keep the game as a hobby and take a different career path.

I would prefer for the devs of the game to actually care about it.

See: Blizzard Entertainment, Mojang AB, Bethesda Games

All three of these companies had one thing in common: Their devs LOVED the games they created. When they stopped, the quality went down.

Yeah!! Hes not much of a social media person. But he does wanna have a place for others to find his works at.
And no worries! He really loves making mods and asked me to help him find out stuff if I wanna. He very much is looking for opportunitys and we had alot of conversations about it all!
His time on the server dev team really made him feel more confident in mod work though. And he wishes to try it out more. He really likes VS systems. And he finds that whole part interesting. Even if he only plays once in a blue moon. He much rather figure more about how it all works!
