I play with a large mod list which includes mods such as Butchery mod, Alchemy mod, and A Culinary Artillery mod, I use to also use Primitive Survival mod and also noticed there is a mod called Grappling hooks, what do they all have in common you might ask? Well its obviously that each of those mods have you crafting some form of clay mold to make some form of metal hook or directly smiting one on a anvil or for a few gives the option to make hooks out of flint for early game.

Now on a lightly modded game this is all find and dandy but if you like me and have a large mod list with at least two or three of those mods installed you run into the issues of too many different types of hooks and their molds taking up space bloating everything up and getting confusing remembering which hook goes to what recipe at first glance, this makes me wish for a single base game hook to be added just so mod authors would no longer have to keep making their own version every time because if base game had its version then it could be treated the same way metal nails in the game is treated, as a single item that is used in many types of recipes making it somewhat valuable just through versatility of uses meaning always needing to make more of them.

Now I was among the people a bit surprised hooks weren't added in the recent fishing mechanics recently added but I'll hold out hope that its a planned feature in the future maybe for when they work on fleshing out more of the fishing mechanic's features or maybe they will add them into the game alongside the talked about herbalism/ brewing mechanics that have been hinted at, the Alchemy mod has shown that hooks are useful there for herb racks hanging herbs so I'm keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏻for such a thing also being true for the new herbalism system. If they do add base game hooks I hope the mod authors of the mods I listed before consider maybe replacing their hooks with any new base game metal hooks just to avoid needless item bloat and recipe confusion.

Anyway, Does anyone have any thoughts on this topic and if anyone agrees that they should add them to base game and what are some of the uses and recipes you guys would like to see added for them?

Hooks could easily be added to the base game, but they really ought to have a purpose before they're added, otherwise they're just a cosmetic item. Not that there's anything wrong with cosmetic items, but there are definitely more interesting decorations that could be added.

As for the uses, you've listed several good ones, however, it's important to note that the hooks used to create something like a grappling hook or spice/meat hanger are going to be quite different than the hooks one would create for fishing. Videogame logic could be applied to simplify things, but I think a lot of players would be questioning why the same hook used to craft a fishing pole can also be used to craft a grappling hook, despite the hooks obviously being very different sizes.

The best solution, I think, would be to just add two varieties of hooks--one large and one small. Large hooks can be used to create furniture like spice/meat racks, coat racks, lantern hangers, etc. Small hooks could be used for fishing and jewelry. Large hooks could be a forge recipe, while small hooks could be casting only or perhaps require jewelry-making techniques to craft.

I don't really see why they wouldn't, unless they specifically want to override the vanilla recipes for some reason.

As LadyWYT already said, I don't see a reason why metal hooks shouldn't be added to the base game, one day - but also there needs to be a reason for them to exist. "Several mods add the same thing" is not a reason for them to exist in the base game. And fishing isn't the reason a solid metal hook of the kind you hang on the ceiling/wall to attach stuff to needs to exist. As the devs are averse to gore, mechanics like with the Butchering mod will not exist and therefor I see little hope we will get a metal hook to hang corpses for funsies. Herbalism could add hooks for use akin to the alchemy mod but that remains to be seen. I don't know where and how A Culinary Artillery uses hooks as I do not use that mod myself right now, but going off of wishful thinking alone having hooks to hang pans and other utensils on the wall could be a cool thing to have in the game? Either way, with 1.23 being the armor rework (probably) and whatever the other main focus is update and 1.24 being the chapter 3 update, it will likely be quite some time until we can hope for any major changes that bring reasonable hope for base game hooks with it.

As for the immediate future though, and a baseline for your request; While having metal hooks in the base game could be neat and would solve the issue you mentioned, the issue you mentioned being mod-related it should probably an issue to be mod-solved. Either the developers of said mods work together and make compatibility patches to reduce duplicate hook clutter, or someone goes be the good Samaritan and makes a library mod that doesn't add code snippets, but rather common items many mods use those mods could then depend on. A mod just to add hooks and other common crafting pieces so that other mods can rely on it as the baseline for those items.

It might not be used to hang corpses, but it could easily be used to hang cuts of meat for aging, like what Expanded Foods and Ancient Tools allow, in addition to hanging bundles of herbs and other things.

A Culinary Artillery just adds the tools--it does nothing on its own. The player will need to install a mod like Expanded Foods in order to actually have a use for those tools.

The hooks would be a great option for hanging more stuff on the wall though. We do already have tool racks for that purpose, but tool racks don't necessarily fit the aesthetic of every room.

Not to detract from the larger point, but this actually is the reason why we have a number of non-functional ores like uranium in the base game. It's explicitly to avoid the classic minecraft modpack problem of having three different types of copper, aluminum, etc all competing for space in the same heavily modded world.
