Does sneaking make it harder for animals to detect you?

Cool, I didn't expect it to. So all it really does is stop you from falling off blocks and lets you fit into 1.5 square spaces, like under a slab? 
I ask because I remember a Minecraft mod that added crouching/crawling and I loved it, since you could fit into 1x1 holes in a totally realistic manner. VS could benefit from something like that, especially if/when stealth actually means something, since you could crawl through the bushes towards your prey to catch them unawares. Might be cool.

It seems to, but since you can't change elevation, up or down, without letting go of Crouch, it's rarely useful.

Yes, Thorfinn is correct on both counts.

I use it regularly while hunting, but you kind of have to plan ahead and approach from a direction that doesn't require any elevation change.
