conninator2000 Posted July 14, 2024 Report Posted July 14, 2024 Just took a quick look and its the part that suggests adding this launch argument --env=mesa_glthread=false Also @mard in case you missed the guide i followed up with that walks through syncing a pc and deck version save. Might be worth adding a link to it on your guide for those that want to suffer a bit setting things up. I figure its probably not worth posting as its own guide since its dependent on this install/platform. 1
Onehit97 Posted July 15, 2024 Report Posted July 15, 2024 My issue seems to be fixed and it was completely unrelated to VS. My steam deck is running Bazzite which broke the mouse cursor in gaming mode. An update to the Bazzite image was made to fix this just today. If anybody is running Bazzite and has had issues with the mouse cursor becoming invisible the past few days, update your Bazzite image in desktop mode and the problem should be fixed! 1
quihyr Posted January 3, 2025 Report Posted January 3, 2025 Thanks for this thorough guide, I'm now able to play it on my Steam Deck. Much appreciated! 1
Mr Singularity Posted February 5, 2025 Report Posted February 5, 2025 Bit of a problem on my end. Can't install the damn thing with the Discover app. It just throws up this error every time I try. 'Aborted due to failure (While downloading https://cdn.vintagestory.at/gamesfiles/stable/vs_client_linux-x64_1.20.3.tar.gz: While fetching https://cdn.vintagestory.at/gamesfiles/stable/vs_client_linux-x64_1.20.3.tar.gz: [6] Couldn't resolve hostname) Yes I know those are links, I don't know how to fix it. 1
mard Posted February 6, 2025 Author Report Posted February 6, 2025 (edited) @Mr Singularity Thank you for your report. Well, you're not alone! It means content delivery network is unreachable, because Anego unexpectedly changed some URLs in the backend. 7 hours ago, Mr Singularity said: https://cdn.vintagestory.at/gamesfiles/stable/**** The new URL is https://cdn.vintagestory.at/gamefiles/**** (notice the change from gamesfiles to gamefiles) Don't worry about it, this issue should be resolved in a day or two. Edit: @Mr Singularity Ok sorry, but the repo says it uses gamefiles now and it should be resolved correctly. Did you at least refresh your repository database? I'll update the OP in the coming days. I have no idea what 'repository database' means to be honest. I'm trying to get the game running on SD because it just wont stop stuttering and freezing on my laptop. I'm pretty much the opposite of tech savvy.

I wasn't been able to reproduce this problem on my end, however I think I have a clue. Couldn't resolve hostname error indicates that the name resolution server in your network haven't been able to return the IP address pointing to the server hosting game files. There could be multiple reasons for that - a temporary domain misconfiguration or content blocking policy in your network. If the problem persists and you still are not able to install the game in your home, you will need to change the the DNS server manually (image credit GOL). Among most popular public DNS are CloudFlare's 1.1.1.1, Google's 8.8.8.8 or Quad9 9.9.9.9. Any of these should work unless you live in a country that blocks these. If the game still refuses to install with the same error, you'll probably need to set up a VPN connection to make sure nothing in your network interferes with the domain name resolution.
L1d Posted March 6, 2025 Report Posted March 6, 2025 Hi, @mard and co. I got my deck yesterday and immediately downloaded Vintage Story. I've run into the same issue as at least one other commenter - the keyboard is sitting behind the login window. I use (Steam X) to bring it up and it doesn't. When I quit, there it is so I know that the keyboard is opening. I tried the solution suggested in the steam link but that hasn't helped. I'm going to order a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, but I really wanted to start playing the game on the deck over the weekend. I saw your comment about rebooting into the gaming mode from the desktop which might fix it but I don't understand what you mean by that as I am a rank beginner. Any help will be appreciated. Meanwhile, I shall order a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Incidentally, thank you for the very helpful guide.

I never had any problems with virtual keyboard in the gaming mode before. An USB connected keyboard might help to log in into the game. Other than that, I have no comment as of now. Many users experience improvement if they add --env=mesa_glthread=false to their launch parameters - but your mileage may vary. I'll try to address this issue in the future, if possible - but as of now I have some other priorities.
L1d Posted March 7, 2025 Report Posted March 7, 2025 All good, thank you for responding. I will just have to exercise my patience and wait for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
L1d Posted March 7, 2025 Report Posted March 7, 2025 I'm embarrassed to say this but the fix was as easy as watching the IT Crowd. I turned it off and back on again. 1 1
narinder Posted March 22, 2025 Report Posted March 22, 2025 This is a great thread, but i’ve run into an issue. when using syncThing, my world does not appear in-game, even though syncThing says the file has been synced. when bringing over the world file manually, VS registers it as corrupted. the save file works perfectly fine on both of my Windows computers, and I’ve transferred it between them several times, so I figure it’s got something to do with the linux version. any help would be appreciated
Dak Darklighter Posted March 26, 2025 Report Posted March 26, 2025 (edited) Anyone else have authentication server issues sometimes I can play most of the time it throws itself into offline mode? I’ve tried everything I can find online. Not a firewall issue not a network issue as every other game works and every other device in my house works. I tried to change the DNS to 1.1.1.1 and I have tried both wired and wireless connections still no dice. Edited March 26, 2025 by Dak Darklighter Added info
VintageCody Posted April 12, 2025 Report Posted April 12, 2025 Does anyone know how to cycle through the hot bar on steam deck? The bumpers won't work

If you set the bumpers to mouse wheel up and mouse wheel down, it works just fine and actually scrolls the entire hot bar, works flawless!! Figured that out Saturday night! 1
Adude Posted May 10, 2025 Report Posted May 10, 2025 I can't get past login, keeps saying "Failed to connect to auth server." I checked and my Internet is fine. I also tried a hotspot, but it still isn't working
Diff Posted August 6, 2025 Report Posted August 6, 2025 Anyone else running into issues with the on screen keyboard on Deck? Lately pressing the Steam+X chord, or even creating a brand new binding for it, doesn't work. The keyboard summoning sound plays, and if I bring up one of the overlays, it'll be there, but not when the actual game is focused.

Figured that out Saturday night! One of my favorite things to do in games is to bind the left trackpad to a scroll wheel with counter/clockwise rotations bound to scroll up/down. Depending on the game, it can also be nice to bind it to a radial menu with items for 0-9 to hop to specific spots on the hotbar.
Adude Posted August 6, 2025 Report Posted August 6, 2025 @Diff I find that if I turn my steam deck off with vintage story running, the keyboard won't appear after i turn it back on. Restarting the game completely, or the steam deck itself, fixes it 1
Thorfinn Posted August 6, 2025 Report Posted August 6, 2025 FWIW, StreamDeck is still working flawlessly.
TrollingJoker Posted August 23, 2025 Report Posted August 23, 2025 Can someone give a 1 to 1 description of how to recreate the steam community layout? Can't find it anywhere nor do the mentioned links resolve to anything useful.
VintageCody Posted August 23, 2025 Report Posted August 23, 2025 Trolling joker, what issues with your layout are you having?
peebody Posted September 16, 2025 Report Posted September 16, 2025 (edited) Many thanks for the steam deck installation guide. I had a fairly simple time doing it by myself, without this guide but this IS still very through and works 100%. I'm excited to finally play Vintage Story for the first time. For those with issues on the controller layout, just refer to the screenshot image in here of the bindings and you can set one up from scratch fairly simple enough. Just go through and copy their bindings from the screenshot on your deck. I should say, I'm playing through the dock so I'm on KBM and didn't mess with the controller layout in my install. Adam Housman Posted September 17, 2025 Report Posted September 17, 2025 FYI, on my Steam deck clicking the left trackpad doesn't result in a right-click, you need to press L2 in order to bring up right-click menu.
