Give me building blue prints so I can make something that isn't a box without my head exploding. NPC villages and villagers that I can recruit to my box city to do all the work for me so I can explore. A good margarita recipe for those days when I visit my box villa in the southern climate.

I love how seasons ebb and flow in VS... I find winters to be wonderful and atmospheric... I get a lot done in winter, especially under ground. I recently strayed to a different survival-ish game (Medieval Dynasty) and am disappointed by the seasons just happening over night (poof!). MD is really a village builder more than a survival game, beautiful but disappointing. I mention this just as contrast to VS where weather, seasons, crop growth, etc. have such great pacing. Enjoy!

Brown Bears need a speed nerf badly
HalfAxd replied to Discipline Before Dishonor's topic in Discussion
Okay, I watched the video... Yes, the game give-ith and the game take-ith away... lol You had just found some great loot too. On the bear though... you saw it and was free and clear to disengage but you went after it and poked it with a spear, turned and ran... but the bear was in melee range and easily caught and nailed you. On perma-death no less. Going back to my play style when faced with a bear... get away, dig a pit and lure it in. I rarely ever die to a bear or wolf anymore because I don't poke them early game. -
Brown Bears need a speed nerf badly

I don't see them as broken. They are supposed to be dangerous. In game I stay away from forests or dig bear pits before I go in. I will also burn the forest down to clear line of sight. It is the predator's world and I learn to adapt. Enjoy! -
Awesomeness! Welcome to the addiction

LOL... I get it... and I've been in similar situations... While no plan is perfect I still setup a pit at the edge of the forest that I can run the bear back to... then I burn my way thru thick forest, clearing a path for prospecting... make another pit... rinse and repeat... Thick forests are where you die unless you take your time. Besides... fire is good!

I rarely die to bears early game because... 1. Stay out of forests (or at least stick to the edges) 2. dig bear pits and mark them with a pole of dirt so you know where to run to (easy, free, saves your life) 3. Burn vegetation often... clears line of site. All of the above works for wolves too. Have fun, enjoy!

(chapter 1 spoilers) Were you aware that when fighting the first boss...
HalfAxd replied to hstone32's topic in Discussion
Sure... and of course this is my opinion (your mileage may vary)... I like that VS is a hardcore (ish) survival game. I enjoy coming up with solutions to situations you find yourself in. The game does a good job of letting you work around issues. Examples: I dig bear/wolf pits to deal with their threat. I don't go into forests if I can help it. I make liberal use of fire to clear areas for visibility and it doesn't hurt that you can harvest the critters that don't survive it. I build false floors to deal with ceiling mounted nests in caves. These are examples of issues I could work around using what little brain I have The first boss fight throws you in a room and makes you die many times to figure out the "trick" to winning... and then magically the door opens for you... If you are playing hardcore, then you're SOL... That has frustrated many, including myself who have posted about it in the past. Having a kill room like that is more akin to an arcade shooter, i.e. Doom or even Half Life. Maybe that helps explain my thoughts... hope so. Enjoy -

To me, the fight is ridiculous... so I just god mode around it. Being stuck in a room with the boss is just bad game play... In a game I truly love to play. -
I built a King's Highway to the first story dungeon once... it spanned over ocean, lakes and thru mountains... It was glorious! Enjoy

My play style is not build centric. I always create a mud hut then roam around the world looking for a spot that feels right... the mud hut expands as needed until I move out to a new location. I rarely build large structures, mostly because I'm out exploring. Once I get thru the winter I have a habit of starting over. I'm nomadic...

Best Linux Distro for Vintage Story gaming (Nvidia RTX)
HalfAxd replied to Lingam's topic in Discussion
Great post... this is on my short list too. I'll likely go with Mint because I've seen a number of people new to Linux have success with it. Good luck with your transition. -
I tend to light fire to much of the world... so I guess I'm practicing a nature religion and put fire elementals on a pedestal. In the spirit of your question, I should start building some form of alters to fire. Hmmm, could be fun.

Some of the things I do... Bears: I am not some elite gamer, I just learn how to avoid death to bears. Stay out of the forests... burn large sections of forest to clear the way if you have to. Bear pits are your friend... easy to make and they work on wolves too. Climbing: Agreed, but for now I use the StepUp mod as a stop gap. Not really what you're after but it helps. Starting copper: Spawns can suck... I get it... to help in bad situations, use the mod to zoom your view to help spy surface copper. Burn the plains to clear lines of sight to zoom in on copper from a tall vantage point. If all else fails, restart. I do if it is really that bad. Bowtorn and Shivers: In caves I bring a stack of dirt and quickly build 2 stack high walls if there are bowtorn around. Helps, but yes.. they are a pain... you can run away from the cave 30 blocks or so and return after they de-spawn... cheesy... I don't do this too often but I do have my moods. ha! May your crocks always be full

Do you also struggle with picking a suitable base location?
HalfAxd replied to philet's topic in Discussion
I have this problem too... I restart, wander around for a few days to see if there is something that "feels right" and if not, then restart again. I'm not one to start with a scenario in mind like building a dwarven mountain home or something like that. A scenario would make this easier... I need to find a place that looks unique, feels right and usually has access to water for a boat/raft. All that said... when I have settled, explored the area and things have started to feel stale, I restart again... -
My keyboard dexterity is awful... if I get a jump scare (which happens a lot) then I'm done for
-
I almost love starting a new world and wandering thru it for a month more than settling in one world and living in it. I restart a lot just to see something new and explore it. Wonderful aspect of the game.
-
Very much this... essentially I'm building my own floor and boxing myself in... (building a room) It also helps deal with bowtorn that might be around. Again, I do this when I'm not wearing armor, which is much of the early game for me. On a similar note... I wall off sections of caves that I've explored so I'm not visited by spawns from the abyss, while exploring other branches of the cave.

Bear pits are your friend.

I've had "some" success early game by poling up with dirt from a good distance away and building a shelf over to arms reach of the nest. The locusts can climb so you may need to back fill behind you to keep them away. Once close, use your pick to break the nest... they will fall out to the ground while you stay perched near the ceiling on your scaffold. Pretty silly but it works for those of us who run around without armor for a lot of the game. Enjoy
-
I was frustrated when bowtorn were introduced too... Died a lot until I figured out how to deal with them. You get plenty of warning when they wind up... jump behind something or plop down a 2 stack high dirt pile... I always carry a stack of dirt in case I fall into a deep hole while running around... setup a few obstacles around you base for defense. You can then either pick them off at a distance or rush them between shots. My keyboard dexterity is not great and this method works for me. From a survival stand point, running around at night early game (depending on biome) is a good way to die... lol I hope you find a way back to the game, it's such a gem.

i found some giant underwater (water filled) caves.
HalfAxd replied to Thomas Bove's topic in Discussion
I've only ever done this on a small scale in ponds, but can't you basically build a solid block of dirt (however big) and dig out the middle from top to bottom, destroying source blocks to build a dam? I know that sounds like a lot of work, but if you recon the cave and it's worth exploiting, then this would be a "realistic" way to make this happen...
