  1. I love lighting caused fires in VS. I generally start fires early game as a way to hunt and clear line of sight. Fire is good
  2. Hytale looks like Wizard101 went to middle school. Too cartoony and frankly looks like a kids game to me.
  3. This ^^^^ and knapster (which makes knapping less tedious).
  4. Animal pits are your friend. Spot a wolf, back off and dig a pit, bait the wolf to chase you and jump over the trench... easy peasy... Also... stay out of forests as much as possible... I rarely die to wolves & bears anymore
  5. I'm one of those who agrees with you. It's an odd arcade mini game that you can't skip and just doesn't feel right from a game play point of view. I cheat to get around it.
  6. Good luck! Animal pits are your friend. Fire (torching the plains, etc.) is your friend. Don't be afraid to restart often until you learn the mechanics of the game (or just want a different world). Enjoy!
  7. Have you guys learned the ways of cooking (cooking pots, bowls) and storage (crocks and clay vessels)? To LadyWYT's point, if you forage, you can make meals that should get you through to the first harvest. Once you have that harvest you shouldn't have any issues with food (even thru winter). Enjoy!
  8. When I get to that point, I start over. I'll likely never make steel because it's not fun for me to spend that time when I could go explore. By the same token, I cheat to get past the RA boss because that fight is a disappointing arcade mini-game. BTW, I believe you can reduce the distance to the story location in the settings. Do what makes you happy. Enjoy!
  9. I really like the river mod. For the base game, it would be interesting to see the current change based on rainfall up river from where the player is. Flooding should also be considered. Maybe that's the downside to water wheels... This could get really interesting.
  10. Just to contrast... when actually out hunting in a forest (not sitting still) the noise you make stepping on twigs/brush/leaves, the rustling of trees from the wind, and that pesky fly buzzing around your ears, will often mask noises from wild life around you (depending on what they're doing). So, there should be a balance... keep the tension going. Enjoy!
  11. Being mostly an explorer in VS, I like finding the scattered trader here and there. It's part of the fun (goal?) of exploring. If there is a group of them, then even more cool. While I wish they were a little more useful, I have traded a little with them here and there... perhaps we'll see some updates to them in the future. Enjoy
  12. Dig trenches 3 blocks deep and as long as you like (10 blocks for me)... set tall stacks of dirt on each end so you see it at a distance... Work around the prey so they are between you and the trench, then walk toward them. They will run directly away from you and into the trench. Easy peasy Enjoy
  13. Give me building blue prints so I can make something that isn't a box without my head exploding. NPC villages and villagers that I can recruit to my box city to do all the work for me so I can explore. A good margarita recipe for those days when I visit my box villa in the southern climate.
  14. I love how seasons ebb and flow in VS... I find winters to be wonderful and atmospheric... I get a lot done in winter, especially under ground. I recently strayed to a different survival-ish game (Medieval Dynasty) and am disappointed by the seasons just happening over night (poof!). MD is really a village builder more than a survival game, beautiful but disappointing. I mention this just as contrast to VS where weather, seasons, crop growth, etc. have such great pacing. Enjoy!
  15. Okay, I watched the video... Yes, the game give-ith and the game take-ith away... lol You had just found some great loot too. On the bear though... you saw it and was free and clear to disengage but you went after it and poked it with a spear, turned and ran... but the bear was in melee range and easily caught and nailed you. On perma-death no less. Going back to my play style when faced with a bear... get away, dig a pit and lure it in. I rarely ever die to a bear or wolf anymore because I don't poke them early game.
  16. I don't see them as broken. They are supposed to be dangerous. In game I stay away from forests or dig bear pits before I go in. I will also burn the forest down to clear line of sight. It is the predator's world and I learn to adapt. Enjoy!
  17. Awesomeness! Welcome to the addiction
  18. LOL... I get it... and I've been in similar situations... While no plan is perfect I still setup a pit at the edge of the forest that I can run the bear back to... then I burn my way thru thick forest, clearing a path for prospecting... make another pit... rinse and repeat... Thick forests are where you die unless you take your time. Besides... fire is good!
  19. I rarely die to bears early game because... 1. Stay out of forests (or at least stick to the edges) 2. dig bear pits and mark them with a pole of dirt so you know where to run to (easy, free, saves your life) 3. Burn vegetation often... clears line of site. All of the above works for wolves too. Have fun, enjoy!
  20. Sure... and of course this is my opinion (your mileage may vary)... I like that VS is a hardcore (ish) survival game. I enjoy coming up with solutions to situations you find yourself in. The game does a good job of letting you work around issues. Examples: I dig bear/wolf pits to deal with their threat. I don't go into forests if I can help it. I make liberal use of fire to clear areas for visibility and it doesn't hurt that you can harvest the critters that don't survive it. I build false floors to deal with ceiling mounted nests in caves. These are examples of issues I could work around using what little brain I have The first boss fight throws you in a room and makes you die many times to figure out the "trick" to winning... and then magically the door opens for you... If you are playing hardcore, then you're SOL... That has frustrated many, including myself who have posted about it in the past. Having a kill room like that is more akin to an arcade shooter, i.e. Doom or even Half Life. Maybe that helps explain my thoughts... hope so. Enjoy
  21. To me, the fight is ridiculous... so I just god mode around it. Being stuck in a room with the boss is just bad game play... In a game I truly love to play.
  22. I built a King's Highway to the first story dungeon once... it spanned over ocean, lakes and thru mountains... It was glorious! Enjoy
  23. You can download and play the unstable branch of the game when it's available. I've done that, but it's a little crazy sometimes.
  24. My play style is not build centric. I always create a mud hut then roam around the world looking for a spot that feels right... the mud hut expands as needed until I move out to a new location. I rarely build large structures, mostly because I'm out exploring. Once I get thru the winter I have a habit of starting over. I'm nomadic...
  25. Great post... this is on my short list too. I'll likely go with Mint because I've seen a number of people new to Linux have success with it. Good luck with your transition.
