How long after being scared will it take before hens brood again?
Krougal replied to Echo Weaver's topic in Questions
It's always been a pain in the ass. I feel like they get stuck sometimes. They also go through food way faster than it seems like they should. You need to target the animal (it'll be easier if you go into creative mode so they don't run) and type /entity cmd l[] setgen 2 or 3 or 10 "l[]" is for look, you could also do instead "e[type=chicken,range=3,alive=true]" which would do all chickens in 3 squares -
I don't like it. I don't want to build stuff to give me information, nor do I want to carry it, interact with it or recharge it. I just want configurable HUDs that will overload me with information if I so choose. As long as I am not forced into using them, I don't care. Yes, salt exists. You mine halite rock and grind it into salt.

You would have to choose to spawn in the arctic, same as warm or hot. Default is temperate. The issue isn't so much static storage (clay vessels), it is you cannot make the first 2 tiers of personal storage upgrades without cattails/papyrus. Not only can you not make hand baskets, you also can't make hunters packs. So until you get enough flax to make sacks or leather to make backpacks, you are going to be limited to your hotbar. I don't think you are going to be growing much flax up there either. Honestly it sounds like a miserable experience no matter what.
-
I feel the same, although later on it should probably be a habit to use those temporal gears cluttering your inventory and start setting a new spawn point nearby when you go off to do something stupid risky. Never really thought about it, but that is probably why the elk even has 3 spots just for TGs. Yeah, that is also a good thing to do if you aren't using one of the other options. So we've all got a few options available that should suit just about everyone. One could also just play permadeath and not deal with it at all

@cosmobeau If you think of VS as game engine as well as a game, maybe it would make more sense to you? So we have the 3 mods (creative, game and survival) that make up the base game. Not being sure exactly how it would work, but assuming that...we're going to call it HyTale mode because it's late, and I am tired. HyTale mode will also have 3 similar named mods, or maybe it will just have creative and survival, and it will use the VS game mod for the functions it contains. Or maybe it will just be 1 module. Whatever. Say also that you got really ambitious and got some friends together and made up your own total conversion mod, that maybe would use the game mod from VS, but then have your own mod(s) that work together. Maybe a few other groups do this too. So we've got 3 or more distinct games from each other, that run off the same launcher and engine. Maybe someone comes along later and says, you know I like the features from all of these, I want to mash them all together into 1 game mode. It would be a lot of work, although certainly a lot less than making it all from scratch, but they could probably grab all the pieces they like and stitch them together into yet another game mode. Although I am actually starting to like vanilla VS more, the appeal of it has always been the way modding isn't an afterthought like it was for MC, the game was designed from the ground up to support it. So maybe we get a 2nd free game out of this, and who knows, you may decide you like it. Maybe it is a total bust. Hopefully it doesn't take the company down with it. Like I said before, so far it seems like Tyron and his wife have good business sense. They did build a successful software company out of nothing. They are beholden to no publisher that would take the lions share of their profit and possibly interfere in their development as well. They aren't publicly traded and so they have the freedom to do as they see fit. They could be in debt up to their eyeballs too, and they could always turn around and sell the company to Microsoft tomorrow, but giving them the benefit of the doubt and taking them at face value here. Their sales could always dry up too, but the HyTale mode will also no doubt bring in more sales, as maybe there was a fan base there that would not have been interested in VS, but will now buy it when their game is released with it. TLDR, I wouldn't worry over the future of the game too much.

Does anyone know how to work with the "freshHours" value of an item? I released a mod and a user pointed out to me that "FYI this resets the "perishable" time on hides, which is probably an unintended way to extend the shelf-life of these items." Is there a way for me to get the current value of the stack and pass it onto the new created hides? I searched through the assets to see if I could find an example of this, but came up with nothing. My Google-Fu was too weak to produce anything either. I'd only need to do it for the raw hide. Trying to keep the mod what I consider "fair and balanced" so I'd like to fix it, but I guess it isn't the end of the world if I can't.

Smoke from fire pits and forges, pipes and ventalation

*Ears perk up* Don't tempt me. It's a thing in Rust, and I habitually carve up my enemies and eat them or use them for fish bait/fertilizer/feed to horses (yeah, who knew horses were omnivores...), and mount their skulls on spikes. So, anyone up for some multiplayer? Muhhahahahaha Now c'mon vaulty, ass jerky don't make itself!- 74 replies

Y'know, I hadn't thought to do that. In Rust you need actual walls, floors and ceilings for structural integrity as well as defense, and running over containers slows you down. Active defense requires mobility. So it's not something I do with 8+ rambunctious boys running around. In other games I play, it isn't generally practical either. It would work fine in VS though.- 74 replies

God, the little bastards were horrific back then. My solution was to dig a trench all the way around my fields (actually my whole base). In the morning I would go out and kill whatever drifters and rabbits were left. When the bowtorns were added, I just went to a 2 high fence. Lately I thought, why do I bother with the fields and hives when I really have no need to be out there at night anyway. Still, I am bored to death with my current design, I have been using it for a while now. I'd just like to build something a little more interesting, yet I will always be a form follows function kinda guy. So efficiency and practicality are always going to trump aesthetics. I may ooh and ahh over some of the amazing things people show off in the builds section, but I'd never build 99% of them.- 74 replies

Oh, I didn't know they started making 240hz monitors past 1080P. Awesome, something else for me to go drop money on. Yeah, Linux I can't help you. I use RHEL servers for LoB apps, but I always work from the CLI, never the desktop, and I certainly don't game on it. Hopefully one of the other Linux users around here can offer you some useful advice. I really don't think it is a hardware issue, and I play at 512 distance, medium-high settings, and I've got an I9 that was top of the line but it's a few generations behind now, 32GB RAM and a GeForce 4060, which is decent, but not great by any means.

Fencing in your farm in the current versions seems to be a waste by the way. I have not seen 1 rabbit destroy my crops nor 1 raccoon molest my beehives since, 1.19 or maybe even 18 or 17 I forget. My first chiseled block was the other day actually, instead of wasting an iron door to hold my cementation furnace fuel in, I chiseled out a block frame. I was very proud of myself. My bases are very utilitarian as well, my gaming group in Rust calls me "Master builder" I am all about cramming as much utility and defense as I can in as little space as possible. Fortunately I am able to restrain myself from building honeycombed walls in VS.- 74 replies

Uhhh...I'm not an AMD guy, but a quick lookup of your parts and those would seem to be top end parts, although since I am seeing the card used and cheap, I assume they aren't latest gen. It should be more than adequate. Drivers up to date? What is your view distance at? Shadows settings? Did you turn vsync off? Also frames over your refresh rate are a waste, 1440 monitors usually are around 140-165 Hz, I'd cap my framerate no higher than that, although I actually cap mine much lower at 75. I really only ever care about the lowest and average FPS, not the highest. As long as the game runs smooth I am happy, and I'd rather set my video settings to look decent and still have a smooth framerate than an excessively high one. Although all bets are off in a competetive online shooter, where FPS is all that matters.

Oh, come on now, don't use that cheap argument. I expect better from you. The entire game is just an ephemeral collection of 1s and 0s. Hell, the real world might be too for that matter. There is no spoon! What's fun is it would require more care and planning and ingenuity in your base design. Just like the need to illuminate it is an important part of securing it, I don't really consider that fun either by the way, but like you yourself said, sometimes the fun is creating a challenge, like hardcore mode. By your own admission, you don't enjoy base building at all anyway, so nothing anyone says is going to convince you it might be fun.- 74 replies

As you discovered, bronze and brass are sometimes used interchangeably. Bismuth bronze was originally made of bismuth, copper and tin. That is how it is made in Dwarf Fortress. Modern bismuth bronze, which is the recipe VS uses, really is bismuth brass as you noted, but it is still called bismuth bronze. I imagine Tyron went with the zinc one to give us more options; maybe you can't find tin, but you can find zinc and bismuth. If it needed tin too, then you might as well just make tin bronze anyway, since it is better. Black bronze is a thing too, although it wasn't used for weapons or armor, and would be inferior to tin bronze as such. Also tin bronze is as good or better than iron, but not in VS. So why did the Roman legions use iron instead of bronze like the Greeks? Iron was more readily available. The Roman's true strength was economy of scale and understanding of logistics. Amateurs study strategy and tactics. Experts study logistics.

If you can't count on your friends to return your stuff, then find better friends This is the mod you want. There is also of course the built-in option to keep items on death.

Well, he does have a point. Those are realistic things, having them would add realism to the game, but I don't want them in the game either. Even as a mod, I would have zero interest. Girlfriend simulators I get the biggest laugh out of; all the negatives of having to deal with a woman, and none of the positives. No...thank...you...! Remember, I am not against the need for proper ventilation in one's base. I think our friend Thorfinn is being a little extreme, as he tends to do, but then I have seen mods in MC that try to do ridiculous things regardless of the consequences, so maybe he is not being unrealistic. Hell, I never even played the mod that got Tyron started and I never had any interest in it, which is funny considering this game in a way is his mod made into a stand alone game. In theory having to even be mindful of torches in caves and even bring a canary into the coal mine with you would also add challenge, I'd see them as dragging system performance down for not enough value in return. There's also enough challenge to be had in the caves what with mobs spawning all around you out of thin air without having to deal with this on top of it. I don't think it has to be an all or nothing proposition, just like with the water transport. Is it performant? Is it fun? Does it make sense in the context of the game? Is it realistic? Always those questions, in that order.- 74 replies

New maps are worse - I will give up changing maps!!!
Krougal replied to Cerehelm's topic in Suggestions
Yeah, the default is way too low. Even the recent change Tyron made, 2.5% is miniscule, even if he made the scale larger (and I admit I do not fully understand the interaction between all the settings) "Worldgen. These are personal preferences again here. I like to set the world width and length down to 51k and the equator distance to 25k. It is still plenty big enough to explore, but it won’t take real life days to see different climates. Also the amount of ocean is something I am still trying to find the sweet spot. I want actual oceans, but of course it is hard to see what you got without exploring extensively. I think I’ve got it at 70% landcover right now, of course the Earth has a helluva lot more water. I may wind up trying 30% next time." - Excerpt from Krougal's Unofficial Vintage Story for Dummies A lot of my older worlds were with 30% landcover, but I was also using TerraPretty in many of them, which I am not even sure if it respects that setting or not (there are some it outright ignores). Those did give good large oceans and continents. I feel the vanilla world gen is a lot better in 1.21 but like I've said in other places, I may have just gotten lucky. I'm also running a seed I have run many times before, but I have also seen many variations of it; both in settings, game versions, and world gen mods used. Pretty much every iteration of this seed has been at least what I consider decent, many have been exceptional. Unfortunately, without doing a lot of exploration, it is impossible to know if your ocean setting was too little, too much or just right. Sometimes I do go into creative mode and crank the fly speed up to about 12x and go zoom around the map, but it is still very time consuming, and of course it takes some of the joy of exploration away from actual survival play. -

Pretty much what Thorfinn said sums up my thoughts as well. You're being a little dramatic, we just disagree with you, we aren't upset over it. You and I agree a lot of the time and we have good discussions in general. Can't agree all the time If we very broadly define sim game, then almost every game is a sim game, they are all simulating something to one degree or another. Honestly, I am not even sure how this discussion devolved into yet another argument over terminology or why we care. Whatever defines what VS is, I don't think any of us really care, we all just care about VS itself.- 74 replies

2 days is what I recommend. As you said, too long and it makes things too easy. Shameless self-plug Guide is a constant WIP, I am editing it frequently as I play. Like LadyWYT, I did 10 days when I first started (after I got my ass handed to me on default survival) and I felt like it was a joke by the time they started spawning. Calm or low are no problem, and you should go out and do things on those nights but It really sucks getting high or apocalyptic activity on the first day or even medium really. Granted the bowtorn and shivers have really been toned down since they were introduced. They were insane originally. Many of us modded them away. I feel they are finally well balanced now.
