Is there any way to turn already placed dirt into a path block? I am making a huge path across my mountain range, and around a lake, and I REALLY don't want to have to dig up every block of dirt, just to place a new type of dirt... Also, path blocks are expensive! No way I'll make a proper path all that way without spending hours grinding out stone!

Honestly, I think it would be nice to have a cheap dirt path to use for keeping direction, no speed benefit. I know we have packed dirt, but you still need to dig up the other dirt to place it, and I like the little dip the path blocks have, where its not flush with all the other blocks. We could do what that other block game does, where you right click dirt/grass with a shovel to turn it into a dirt path. Then you could possibly shift right-click those blocks with stone in hand, to turn them into the current stone path blocks? It would let you plan your paths easier, and remove one more crafting grid recipe.
It could open up other opportunities for alternative path types too, by clicking on the initial dirt path with different materials. Sand, gravel, maybe even asphalt. All done without needing to use the crafting grid.

No dirt path that I'm aware of, but you can use a saw on planks to get wooden paths. It may be a different aesthetic than your standard road, but it will mean you don't need to dig up a bunch of dirt.

I can't think of an easy way, and while looking through the mod database the other day (not for this, but something else) I didn't see anything that would replace a block with another block.

However, if it's a large project and something that you really want and are willing to "bend the rules a little", you could drop into creative mode. It's not a mode I use a lot (other than some screenshots and occasionally getting myself out of noclip situation) but I would imagine it has tools that could speed up the process somewhat.

You can repeatedly flip between survival and creative easily using a console command. Open up your chat window, and type /gm 2 to go to creative, type /gm 1 to go return to survival. While in creative, pressing [f3] will toggle between noclip and flying.

you can use packed dirt. it does involve you digging out existing dirt, but 6 dirt equates to 6 packed dirt. and is a good option for making dirt paths.

Going to add into that rammed earth. I'm sure you know this but for those who don't (and interestingly it's not mentioned in the wiki) ..rammed earth has the same conversion ratio (1 to 1) but repeatedly putting rammed dirt into the crafting square will give you up to 4 different textures, which makes building paths with them really nice.

I've used them for my floor, image in the spoiler.

However for large pathways, I'd stick to either the stone or wood paths just for the speed buff when walking on it. With stone paths that is an increase of 1.3, while the wooden paths are less, 1.12 (not sure why you'd walk slower over a wooden path than you would a stone one but those are the stats from the guide).

A quick warning for those intending to use stone pathways, they will not count as a full block,  if you were to have a path to your greenhouse with the stone block being the block that the door stands on (or is the base for any of your walls) then it won't consider the greenhouse closed off.

Nice find. Would have used that myself. I'm using primitive survival though, and the above mod (better hoe) would have been better had it been a shovel.

The way compatibility is currently set up between those two is a bit unfortunate. You either have to decide between the Primitive Survival or Better Hoe hoe functionality. This doesn't affect the already created blocks at all.

Which means that you can switch between those. That will require a world reload every time, which could be somewhat annoying but it would definitely be feasible, because how often do you use those two hoe mechanics combined.

IMO, it would be better to give every tool an "F" mode, even if it has just the one use currently.. PS is a little irritating in that if I start trying to prepare fields too fast, I'll end up with a lot of irrigation that I don't want.. I'd vastly prefer to be able to switch to irrigate mode as desired and retain my vanilla hoe technique.

I'm making use of primitive survival a lot and if i have to choose between it and better hoe, Primitive Survival is king in my eyes every time. I'll give the latter a try if they can make it a shovel instead.

I had no clue rammed earth was even a thing. It might be too pale of a block to make for a good path, but I do like how you can get different textures by placing it in the crafting menu!

There is indeed. If you don't mind using mods. https://mods.vintagestory.at/betterhoe (It still works on 1.20.6.)

Ah! This is a great find, thank you! I will probably wait to use it for my next playthrough, since I am too far into my current path setup to use it lol
Sad to hear its not compatible with Primitive Survival. I was also considering trying that out on my next playthrough as well.

Yeah, it's lovely, a really nice block and with it only needing just dirt, I would totally normalise the classic first day base to be made out of this rather than plain dirt. If only more people know about it!

I turn on cave-ins in my game, after all you might as well live dangerously, and the rammed earth works absolutely fine as a floor/ceiling in multi-storey building.
