Why isn't the "carry on" mod just incorporated into the base game?

I seem to recall something being mentioned quite a while back about it potentially getting added to the game at a much later date--closer to the game's completion. I think the reasoning was due to all the possible inventory tweaks that may take place between now and then, that probably break a system like carry-on. So it makes more sense to add that system later, once inventory is really set in stone proper, and not slated for any further changes.

Otherwise, I would guess it could be that the mod no longer fits the intended direction of the game. I can't say that I've played with it, but inventory space is at a premium in the early game, and one of the major challenges you'll need to deal with. Sticking a chest or storage vessel onto your back gives you a looooooot of extra slots to work with, which is a time-saver, yes, but takes a lot of that early challenge away.

carry on just lets you pick up a storage container (both hands must be empty, and once in your hands you cant move with your hotbar...and you're way slower) so it's mostly just for redecorating or moving short distances without having to take everything out.

Although I forgot they're looking for alternatives to the grid crafting system. Once that changes, it only makes logical sense the inventory would change as well. Thanks for the insight!

It also lets you carry it on your back. Up through chests, maybe crates, too. Ctrl-RClick when you aren't pointing at any block, IIRC. I don't mind it for rearranging, though as @LadyWYT says, it's a little much if you use it as extra inventory. Last I read on it, it was always just lower priority than everything else.

Though it's not like it takes all that long to completely empty all your backpacks, "break" the vessel and let it and all the contents fall on the ground, put it where you want it, walk over it and pick up all the things, and Shift-Click everything back into it. When I'm playing games where it's enabled, I almost always forget I can just move stuff. 🙁

In the Tyron's interview he said they are still thinking about making mass a thing along with the current volume restriction, so putting a container on your back is not going to happen in my opinion.

Being able to pick something up with both hands and move it around though needs to be a thing. I hate when I'm trying to rearrange my base and realize I put my storage in the wrong spot.

Oh, lol. I never knew that. Well, if it gets added, I'd definitely just keep it to where it's just for moving them short distances. You could even load up a boat (or handcarts, if we ever get those) easier that way. For doublechests, one player could grab one end and another player grabs the other end in order to move it. (More complex, but would be cool as heck)
