Wolfs everywhere

I just started a new World and found a nice place to live, but there are wolfs everywhere. There is no forest in a radius of at least 100-200 blocks, but there are wolfs everywhere in the plain. I had a 30 hour world before but never had that issue. I use the mods HUD clock as well as Plains & Valleys, but I don't think that is what causes this problem.

Is this a new feature or a bug in version 1.20.9? Can I get rid of that by doing something in-game or by changing the world settings via command? I don't want to fear being attacked by a wolf at any time.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know of any. The problem usually is that, while where you settled may not be forest, it's just the most foresty place in the area.  I think 1.20 changed the rules a bit, because they are much more commonly seen in bushes and even plains than they used to be.

You COULD go in and edit the JSON to require a higher level of forest (currently set to 0.5, IIRC) and see if that helps.

I solved my wolf issues slowly over time by digging pits for them to fall into and get trapped. Once enough wolves are trapped, no new ones seem to spawn. It was a year long project to secure the entire area around my base, so it's not exactly a quick fix solution.

can't say enough about the magic of fences

got the fence that surrounds the perimeter of main dwelling (and other dwellings frequently used).  fences on both sides of the worn pathways used.

strategic fencing at the edge of known spawning spots (forest).

I still don't have a wolf problem in my first seed from 1.19 where no wolves or bears spawn in this bushy area where I always build my base. Unless they did something in 1.20.9 that is. I have played the seed a couple times in 1.20 with no change in wolf spawn patterns. They are exactly where they have always been although the map has changed a little.

Huh.

I don't reuse seeds, ever. I've had wolf "issues" since the shiver release. Kinda weird to have bushmeat be more than enough to keep the protein bar filled. Well into October and still have not hunted anything other than wolves and a half-dozen brown bears. Which is good, because the predators killed all the animal life, so not much of a choice on my part.

I had a game pre shiver where I was in a big old rainy plains region and there were wolves wolves and wolves inside and on top of other wolves.

I used more trees cooking for bushmeat than for construction...I left that area eventually, though. If they wanted to be that ruin so much, the world is vast...so I let them have it, after consuming several generations of their obstinate kind.
