Hey! Been playing for like 5 hours and honestly love this game, and searched the wiki and handbook to see if this has been implemented and saw it hasn't and I was like wow, this needs to be added!

Wolf domestication! Turning into dogs!

Maybe adding some events like we believe to have happened to wolves in our past, where they scavenged off of our scraps then adapted to us and we adapted to them sort of thing. We can maybe see that more often in game in the fall months where there isn't as much food or where rabbits try to go for farm lands and the wolves hunt the rabbits nearby and they chose to ignore us cause they realize we are the source of said food, etc. Some sort of script or something over time. I know, lots of work and I am no scripter. Just a player with an active imagination and love for a bit of history. But my wolf to dog history isnt the best and people can correct me if I am wrong about them casually growing with us over time. 😆

Me and some friends are finding that base game wolves can have generations and can breed, which is super cool! We're at gen 3-4 with them atm, so we'll keep posted on whether there are any gameplay implications for them (like if they can be picked up as babies at gen 5, or become docile at gen 10).

That's awesome. I'll have to test this for myself. I can't get wolf taming to play nice with my other 39 mods so I'll have to wait and see if the devs decide to make wolves tameable in the future.

I went file diving to find out, so spoilers:

Spoiler

In 1.21, I actually do see some wolf generational changes. At Generation 2, they'll follow someone holding a lead and can be tied with a rope, at Generation 1 they become "pettable." But they never stop being aggressive. Wolf babies are pettable starting at Generation 0. I don't know what it means for an entity to be pettable though and I don't know if this means it'll stop trying to eat you if you can get a lead on it.

Damn, that's mildly disappointing. Ik pettable generally means if you pet them the creature just chills out, but it isn't the case for the wolves after testing as they still want to eat me. I tried putting a rope around it but it definitely still is aggressive (I actually tied two wolves together accidentally, it was pretty funny).

We'll probably still breed the wolves because the friend I play with is very adamant on keeping them.

How were you able to get your wolves to breed? I trapped a male and female, and I've been looking everywhere but can't find any concrete answers on encouraging breeding!

Base game wolves don't breed, yet. That kind of function comes from mods currently.

Tyron has stated in the past (and wolf pup trafficking adds credence to this) that he does want to make it possible to tame wolves.  For now, canines are aggressive in the base game.

This doesn't make sense though.. why would traders buy and sell wolf pups (mind you, unique wolf pups as wild ones don't count for buying and selling) if they weren't tamable at some point?

They keep it in a cage or something, presumably.

I would assume that it has something to do with the player not being human. From a pure gameplay standpoint...it's probably a lot easier to repurpose the wolf pup model as a trade item, than it is to try to code an entire system for taming and training wolves.

Tyron built in the potential for taming wolves.  As long as I've played the game (started in 1.14) there has been a market for wolves.  Seems like Tyron hasn't gotten around to building a wolf taming mechanic; although it seems like he's zeroing in on it with the recent elk domesticating mechanic.   He might be working on mechanics for tamed wolves, like hunting which don't exist for other tame animals like livestock and elk.

I think it’d be awesome if wolves could be not only domesticated, but selectively bred for certain traits. Imagine breeding dogs/wolves for more speed or damage or even certain behaviors like herding goats, protecting livestock, racing, etc. This could make hunting, fighting monsters, or even fighting other players much more interesting. They could also be bred for size, color, and physical traits, like short noses or floppy ears. Please like this if you want to see it in the game
