jola Posted June 11, 2025 Report Posted June 11, 2025 Need help here. I just encountered a block when breaking it and it says: "I cannot build or destroy here. It's claimed by a higher power." What gives? Thanks for the suggestions.
Tom Cantine Posted June 11, 2025 Report Posted June 11, 2025 That happened to me at one of the story locations. It's so you don't just mine your way past obstacles and challenges. You've found a story location! 2

Looks like you've found the archives, which is the first story location. There is a proper entrance with doors up on the surface, though it is a decent challenge intended for the bronze age. 1

I can see the difficulty and I may have to bring a couple more of bronze pickaxes because the mountain area is almost made of rocks. And perhaps it would take me a lot of time to look for the door not to mention dying in the process. So, I'd also bring a gear for the respawn. Also thinking that I may as well establish a base camp near the area and craft all the necessary tools and cook foods for the adventure. 1

Once you are inside the location itself you cannot break/place blocks (to prevent you from skipping various puzzles and combat encounters), so keep that in mind when preparing to attempt it. I definitely recommend making a little base camp. Somewhere with a fire pit, some trunks to store loot, a bed and lots of healing items. 2

The mines are also protected but a few hundred blocks away from the archives. 1

Come to think of it that I haven't even discovered/mined iron yet. Right now, I feel inadequate to face the adversaries. In the meantime, I have established my fourth home base just a hundred blocks or so away from the treasure map the trader has marked and it seems like starting the game all over again thinking I had to so I can survive the adventure. 1
Maelstrom Posted June 15, 2025 Report Posted June 15, 2025 It's possible to defeat the boss in the archives with flint spears and poultices. For those of us with age eroded gaming skills? Hmmmm... Bronze could do it. Iron if you fear the worst case scenario is the best case scenario. 3

Maelstrom Posted June 16, 2025 Report Posted June 16, 2025 If you go in with bronze, be sure to take plenty of healing supplies. Depending on your strategy and RNG it could turn out to be difficult. My 2 trips through the RA were totally different. First time (as blackguard) didn't need any healing. Second time as hunter, things went south at the end and used all the healing I brought with me. 1
Thorfinn Posted June 16, 2025 Report Posted June 16, 2025 If you are going that route, @jola, it helps a lot to prepare and throw a bunch of healing poultices, rock spears and even improvised armor down the hole before you start the battle. That lets you re-equip just by running around, which you are doing a lot of anyway, trust me. If you are equipped with good armor, you might be able to win without dying, but I sure didn't manage it. I had to get my character killed again and again learning the enemy's attack patterns. 1

Second time as hunter, things went south at the end and used all the healing I brought with me. My character is just a commoner with a leather armor. Now I am having a third thought proceeding soon. It would seem it'd take me longer to go on with the archive adventure because I have to establish my 4th Base, maintain the farms, greenhouses and inventories of the other bases. The tasks are so huge! I have to build a boat and another windmill, etc. Whew! But I'm having fun and enjoying every bit of it.
Maelstrom Posted June 17, 2025 Report Posted June 17, 2025 I built a very simple outpost for the RA. Just a shack (maybe 5x5), dug a cellar (put door on the entrance) and a few trunks to use as a transfer point for all the desired loots. So long as you don't leave at a critical time (i.e. grain close to harvest and potentially temperature damaged if you don't harvest within 7 days of maturing) those chores at home can wait for you to get back. My first RA run had horrid terrain to get through. I found a TL that dropped me off about 1,000 blocks from the RA, but there was hilly forest, pond/lakes just to get to the RA mountainous region. That 1,000 blocks would take about 45 minutes irl to navigate one way, iirc. By the time I got back the crops I had planted shortly before I left were ready for harvest. Then again, that TL was at the bottom of an ocean. I had to create a 30 or 40 block tall column to get to the surface and then build a boat house on top of that before even embarking on the first trip to the RA. I suggest taking either a cooking pot and bowl, or an oven and table with sufficient ingredients to cook the meals you think you'll need.
Thorfinn Posted June 17, 2025 Report Posted June 17, 2025 (edited) It's not really what kind of armor, as your combat style is much more important. When you get to the point where your interactions with grizzlies and nightmares sound like Foghorn Leghorn, you are there. "Go, I say, go away, boy, you bother me." [EDIT] Just read the release notes. This may no longer be true. I count on instant heal poultices while I am running around picking up spears. Now that there's a runtime on them, you may not be able to tank it naked. It might require the armor absorbing some of the damage. Edited June 17, 2025 by Thorfinn 2
