The thing about hytale is, that while it's a great idea, we can't really say that it's a "has been", the best way to describe it would be a "never was".

Agreed! Alot of the vision with none of the delivery! I've been hyped for Hytale since day 1. Vintage Story has completely scratched that itch for me! Hytale is now an afterthought

I guess there's talks of Simon buying back Hytale as an IP? Talks of 25 Million USD investment.

Thoughts?

This Simon you refer to is the original creator of the Hytale project, I would assume. I never really followed Hytale's development that closely, especially since it seems to essentially disappear shortly after the release of the initial teaser trailer.

In any case, if the guy wants to invest his own resources into the project, and manages to actually release a product, more power to him. The main hurdle I see to overcome in that regard is all the negative news and sentiments regarding the difficulties of Hytale's development and recent cancellation. Not that it can't be overcome, mind you, but I daresay many people will be skeptical until a playable product is actually delivered.

I agree. Any new promises or posts or the like will be met with skepticism. Maybe they will learn from their previous mistakes. It will be hard for them to get off the ground for sure.

The ultimate race between Tyron and his old boss. We should take running bets for first open playtest. I’ll start: my current survival world.

Would it need to be a race? I don't know if there was acrimony over Tyron's departure from the Hytale project. But maybe there would be something they could do that was mutually beneficial.

That would be epic, but I imagine that they'd have to hammer out their hierarchy really carefully. Tyron left because their visions didn't match up. Somebody has to be responsible for the final decisions.

Fairly noted. I'm not too knowledgeable on the topic. Did Tyron leave after or before Hypixel Studios was acquired by Riot?

I don't know exactly when that acquisition happened, but I'm pretty sure it was before. Like a professional, Tyron doesn't detail exactly what the difference were or whether it was a hostile departure, so we don't really know if they're able to work together or not. 🤷‍♀️

Ah what a shame, but I do respect Tyron's professionalism on the matter! If it was before Riot came into the picture, I see a Tyron & Simon team-up less likely. Although if it was after, I'd feel comfortable assuming his qualm was with the players Riot brought in and the direction they wanted to go in. For most people, it's always easier blaming a corporation but I want to be clear I'm not doing that hahaha just speculating where the disagreement could have originated from.

With Tyron's comment about finances not being an issue in development for VS, I could imagine even a little desire to want to be a part of Hytale. That's only if it were to resonate with the reason he joined their team in the first place way back when.

It could be exactly what he said officially, which is creative differences. Since he was able to realize his vision with Vintage Story, and the vision of Hytale is now the focus, those problems might not exist.

I'm impressed to see Tyron say that money is not the constraint. I have very seldom seen anyone in his position in software say that. I have been skeptical that this financial model of charging a (low IMHO) one-time fee that includes all future expansions is a viable financial model, but apparently VS is doing just fine. The hosting service might be a big part of that, but it's not like I have seen the books.

That makes me hopeful for other indie game efforts I'm following that are going the same route.

To add to that, VS has been a slow burn! So it could be, in terms of financials, he isn't putting much into it therefore making more than what he's spending. Leaving extra being saved up for, well the adventure mode for example. Or a bigger team. Haha

Well, he said he has 20-something staff now, which seems pretty decent for an indie studio.

I guess the game is officially early access, but I really consider the new content releases to be expansions. They're certainly large enough. With that in mind, an expansion and a major bugfix release a year isn't too bad.

Tangentially, I kind of think "early access" as a term is getting over-used. I think of that as a game that is essentially an open beta, where you purchase the final product at a discounted price in order to play the beta and help the dev team see how the game plays. VS is far more refined than that -- it seems more like a completed game to me with expected regular content additions. If Tyron really has ideas going out 10 years, then if it's classified as early access, it's essentially early access forever. Defining it as a complete game with future expansions included in the price looks a lot better than a perpetually incomplete game, and I think it also is more accurate.

ANYWAY.

It sounds like he keeps a pretty tight ship to keep the game consistently on-vision. And I can't complain because as a crafting/survival game goes, I don't think I've ever played one that felt this seamless. But that's at the price of speed. He said that comments to his announcement was prompting him to review his oversight structure. That might lead to things getting faster or maybe not? 🤷‍♀️

Not an actual race, of course, just two people with the same goal, doing similar things. I think they’re on speaking terms (as in they definitely are), so they won’t be calling hits on each other, but there’s going to be some market competition.

I tried, they were not interested unfortunately. We'll go our own way, again 😂

I left 2016, Hytale was acquired 2020.

We had an amicable termination of business relationship, there was no hostility in any shape or form.

Hahahahaha that's okay too! Seems Hytale will be whatever it's going to be (or not going to be) I have high hopes for Vintage Story and any new mods as long as you are the man behind the wheel. Cheers!

Thank you for clearing these points up! It's quite fun to speculate and I'm sure nobody meant any harm with said speculations. I for one am happy to hear relations regarding business were just that; business. ^-^

Kind of a disappointment, but probably better in the long run. They're two people with well-documented differences in vision. Working together might take a huge amount of effort or even be impossible. Even if they start with the same high-level feature set, I'm sure the results will be very different.

It seems like a big risk. I think a lot of developers feel like they've lost a friend. I understand what it's like to work on a game, love it, and then suddenly it's over.

As a creative person, I sincerely wish for them to finally realize their dream.

As a gamer, I'll say this. If Hytale overcomes all the difficulties and comes out, I'll have one more favorite game.

I never got the hype for Hytale to be honest. I remember thinking it was another attempt of a minecraft youtuber trying to bum off their minecraft fanbase for profit (see: Yogventures)

maybe that's not giving due credit, I don't know. I didn't follow along with the project too closely.

In my long standing experience, if their is hype on a game that is not yet out for the public to download then it almost always means it was manufactured hype by a sophisticated marketing apparatus and most likely is not remotely close to as good as the hype because the team spent most of their money on marketing instead of developing.
