Title basically, I'm wondering if I can just strip all the edible stuff from my surroundings without having to worry about it when prepping for winter (I'm in early spring rn)

Hi and welcome to the forums!

To answer your two questions:

1. Yes, animals will respawn. Unsure of the time factor here, but from experience it can be just a few days to a month or more.

2. Multi faceted answer to this one:

  • Wild vegetables will not respawn after being harvested (carrots, onions, flax, rye etc)
  • Berry bushes will flower and bear more fruit, given time to do so. Can also be cut and replanted in your desired location.
  • Mushrooms on the ground, will regrow in the same area (not necessarily the same block). Harvesting with a knife is quicker than just the hands.
  • Same for mushrooms growing on trees, they will eventually respawn on the same tree.

That is no longer the case. They regrow regardless of how you harvest them. The only concern is you don't want to terraform the area very much. If you add or take away a dirt block, they can still spawn there, in the region. Maybe 20m diameter? But if you change the ground too much (no, I'm not sure exactly what that means, but it does include adding paths or cobble or fence) it will stop spawning on those tiles, but will still spawn in nearby dirt-ish tiles. I think you have a few tiles vertically of slop that it can still spawn but I would not swear to it. Best to just leave the area alone.

Yeah. 1.18, maybe? Get a little older and you see those white specs on mushroom spaces if you harvest with knife. But they wanted to get away from the idea of fixed  spawn locations more generally. My understanding is that the zone is still a fixed location, but it's kind of like respawning after death -- somewhere within a radius of the "spawn" location.

So it's no longer the exact same tile.

bit of a late join from me but the zones the mushrooms respawn are fixed and set as XYZ coordinates and not certain blocks (you can toggle seeing them with Shift+M i believe) they're called Mycelium in commands and you can terraform in them and still get spawns but they're only 2-3 blocks tall so if you place dirt lower or higher than that they will have no eligible blocks to spawn

An axe is even quicker in harvesting flora based wild crops.
