an_egg_cultist Posted August 22, 2025 Report Posted August 22, 2025 In the midst of winter, I have realized that there is a rather large amount of snow, and shovels use durability when breaking it. Unfortunately, this is quite a waste of precious material, and I would much rather use my hand to conserve durability despite the large amount of time it takes to clear snow. As a means to save time, a snow shovel could compromise the expense of material while also being limited in use. It would have a large amount of durability and a bonus mining speed to snow, but little/no mining speed bonus for soil. 8
Echo Weaver Posted August 22, 2025 Report Posted August 22, 2025 That's an interesting observation. A snow shovel would be one more specialized tool to haul around, but I agree that it gets annoying to waste durability on snow.

The great part is you wouldn't really need to take it around because it's so specialized. It's convenient to have lying around at your base, but you have no obligation or necessity to take it elsewhere honestly. 2
ifoz Posted August 23, 2025 Report Posted August 23, 2025 Also allowing it to clear snow from chiselled blocks without having to break the block would be fantastic. 5
CloudCloudGuy Posted August 24, 2025 Report Posted August 24, 2025 The amount of copper shovels ive wasted in the winter is too many lol
ThatMaxGuy Posted August 24, 2025 Report Posted August 24, 2025 I do like the idea. Specialized tools can be hard to make actually worth it, but considering it's a tool you'd only use around your house (as people tend to do with snow shovels) there's no worry about it taking up an inventory slot.
Facethief Posted August 24, 2025 Report Posted August 24, 2025 I don’t shovel a lot of snow at my base; just enough to keep the doors clear and keep the chicken run clear, so I just use my bare hands. It’s pretty fast, but as a person from the southeast, I can’t say how much you would do this IRL.

It's also a tool that you only need in areas it snows heavily too. If you live in a warmer climate band, or even the tropics, you probably don't need it at all. Still very useful for the specific circumstances though.

That's a highly specialized tool that gets constant use during the spring, summer, and fall. The snow shovel would take its place during the winter.

I just don't take them very far from base. Snow is an issue everywhere in the winter.
Entaris Posted August 24, 2025 Report Posted August 24, 2025 I dunno about you guys, but I don't really have an issue with the snow. It doesn't pile up high enough to impede travel or exiting my buildings, so I'm fine. Now, were we to MAKE that a problem, letting the snow pile up more like Charcoal without as much of an angle of repose, that'd be something.

It can be a small problem, I just hit winter in my single player world and I usually have to duck to get out of my house if it snowed overnight.

This, plus deeper snow slows you down slightly, as well as makes it harder to see smaller objects/entities. It's not a huge problem, but it's a similar niche to the scythe--you could do all the work by hand, but you could also do it faster over a larger area with a specialized tool.
