Velynicus Posted September 21, 2025 Report Posted September 21, 2025 (edited) It's cold outside, and I have fur clothing and repaired clothing that puts my total warmth. Buff at +10°. It's only -5 out, but I still suffer a hunger penalty. I suffer an equal penalty when I'm completely undressed. It seems the clothing provides no buff at all. I thought that clothes protected you from the cold. What am I missing? Edited September 21, 2025 by David Weisser Additional info 1
Echo Weaver Posted September 21, 2025 Report Posted September 21, 2025 I'm curious about how the temp buffs on clothes work too.
Velynicus Posted September 21, 2025 Author Report Posted September 21, 2025 I changed the game type to creative, and filled in addition to every slot on the left side of the character panel, mask and bracers as well. Change back to survival mode, and there was still no effect. Is it some kind of world config option?

I do not know the mechanics regarding the weather when it comes to canceling debuffs
Velynicus Posted September 21, 2025 Author Report Posted September 21, 2025 Character class is commoner.... What is the point of crafting/ repairing clothing if the buff is irrelevant? Must be missing something....but it would be nice if that so.ething wasn't an invisible mystery .
Velynicus Posted September 21, 2025 Author Report Posted September 21, 2025 Thanks to the help of AI, I've discovered that there may be a difference between the hunger penalty and damage from the cold. I thought they were one in the same. I am not taking damage from the cold outside, however the hunger penalty is the same whether I'm naked or not Additionally, I see nothing on the character screen, whether naked or not to indicate whether I am too cold. Btw this all latest stable version 1.21

Your total temperature buff keeps you warm above 0c. Once you hit 0c (factoring in the buffs) then you start to freeze. So for example if its 0c outside and you have a 1c buff then you will not freeze. Once you start to freeze I think you can loose health and move slower but I am not sure on the cost there. Velynicus Posted September 21, 2025 Author Report Posted September 21, 2025 Thanks for your response. As I said above though, I take no damage when wearing no clothing in negative 10 degree weather. You seem to indicate that should be taking damage. And my hunger rate rises to 120%, again, whether with or without clothing....

And my hunger rate rises to 120%, again, whether with or without clothing.... Hmmm...do you have something in your offhand when this happens? Cold weather will increase your hunger rate while outside, regardless of your clothing; as @CastIronFabric already noted the clothing warmth is just to keep you from freezing. The higher the warmth value from clothing, the longer you can stay outside before you get too cold and start to take freezing damage(such damage starts to happen one in-game hour after the frost overlay is applied, I think). As for hunger rate, I would definitely check to make sure your offhand slot is empty. Equipping something in your offhand applies a 20% hunger penalty, so that is why I suspect that as the main culprit. Cold should increase your hunger rate a bit more slowly, and will be a bit more than 20% at its maximum...more like a 25% penalty, I want to say?
Velynicus Posted September 28, 2025 Author Report Posted September 28, 2025 Nothing in my off-hand. I've searched my other mods - can't seem to find an explanation. Should I start to freeeze right away or does it take a long time?

Should I start to freeeze right away or does it take a long time? Hmmmm, it could be the temperature then, not sure. If it's due to the temperature, hunger rate should drop when you go indoors(insulated space). As for when the player starts to freeze, I believe you have about one in-game hour after the frost overlay becomes prominent on your screen before you will start to take freezing damage. Like hunger damage, freezing damage is a ticking effect, so even when freezing you will still have some time to seek shelter and warm up, though you will need to spend a couple moments getting all nice and toasty before the damage will stop ticking.
Michael Gates Posted September 29, 2025 Report Posted September 29, 2025 You can tell how you're doing with freezing damage by looking at your body temperature with the "C" configuration/clothing screen. You start seeing the frost overlay at.. I think it's 35 degrees? Start taking frost *damage* at about 33. It's not a fixed time, the effects and damage apply faster when it's colder out. This is part of what motivated me to figure out how to do smithing with a helve hammer in a warmed room, it gets to -20 if you're far enough up!

I was stupid enough to visit a Better Ruins' flagship location in the begining of March. That place is located in the middle of freezing biome and when I climbed at it's top, there was -42 °C. I had to burn wood in its kitchen to heat myself up repeatedly while making short runs to fight monsters and find loot on other levels. Also, I have realized that being near to hot firepit heats the seraph's body only when a firewood or something else is actually burning. When the firewood runs out, your body temperature stars decreasing despite the adjacent firepit has 300+° temperature. Was not satisfied with it, fortunately, there was enough wood in the ruin. 1
Teh Pizza Lady Posted September 29, 2025 Report Posted September 29, 2025 From what I can tell diving into the game code, there are certain levels of comfort that cause your hunger to raise or lower. Being outside on a cold day will certainly raise your hunger rate, but I haven't found the exact line of code that computes the hunger rate based on that condition. All I can say is to record it happening so we can see the exact conditions you're experiencing in-game. Maybe there's something you're we're not figuring out that we would see in a video because you didn't know to mention it. 1
